I have a handgun being shipped to a local part-time FFL, and there was a major miscommunication as to exactly how "part-time" he actually is.

UPS attempted to deliver the handgun yesterday, but he was not there to receive it. In my recent conversation with the FFL, he informed me that even if someone is home to accept these deliveries, he is only available for transfers on Mondays. He implied that he probably won't be able to make the transfer this monday (4 days from now) and it might be the next Monday (11 days from now), or later.

So, my question:

UPS typically has the option to change aspects of the delivery while en-route, and I see that button staring at me from the UPS tracking page. Does anyone know if it is possible (or even legal) to change the destination of the handgun to a more professional FFL while en-route?

I am trying to do some quick research into it, but I figured someone here might know the answer off-hand.

I'm guessing that because the shipping FFL has to have a copy of the receiving FFL's license before he ships, the answer is no.

Lemme also guess, this p/t guy was the cheapest transfer you could find?

He was definitely not the cheapest FFL around, but also not the highest.

You bring up a good point about the sender, and gave me an idea. This shipment is from Buds Gun Shop, who has a lot of FFLs on file already.

I am going to call them when they open (if this isn't a holiday for them), and see if changing the destination of a firearm is feasible..

Buds Gun Shop was able to answer my question.

They are not able redirect a shipment of a firearm, even to another FFL, while en-route. If my FFL misses the 3rd delivery attempt, the gun will go back to Buds, and then they can start the process over.

I don't like having created a thread over a question I could have answered myself. But, if it was possible to make the switch to a different FFL while the delivery was en-route, I needed to initiate that process asap.

I assume you chose this particular FFL from Bud's list. Perhaps you should also make sure Bud's is aware of just how part-time he is and save the next fellow the same headaches...

Yes, the FFL was listed as a "preferred" FFL on Bud's list.

When discussing my options with Bud's I suggested that this particular FFL shouldn't be listed as "Preferred" due to the strict schedule a potential customer is stuck with. Because of the "preferred" status, I did not call him prior to the purchase and am now stuck with that schedule. Lesson Learned I guess.

Why on earth would you have a firearm shipped to a dealer you have never spoken to? :scrutiny: A two minute phone call would have saved you this grief.

If my FFL misses the 3rd delivery attempt, the gun will go back to Buds,
All it takes is one phone call from the dealer to arrange a hold for pickup or to arrange another delivery time/day.

Buds has no way to know the business hours of the thousands of dealers they ship to.....that's the responsibility of the buyer.
Bud's (and nearly every other internet gun retailer) keeps a copy of FFL's that they have shipped to. A Bud's "Preferred" dealer is merely one who has agreed to accept all incoming gun transfer without prior approval from the receiving dealer. That's stated on Bud's website.

Not a week goes by that I don't receive a firearm for someone I've never met or spoken to. Sometimes they arrive without any documentation, without ID or FFL , not even the name of the transferee. The gun may sit here for weeks.

Today I received a Bud's gun for just such a person.....someone I've never heard of or know. Bud's includes the buyers phone number...........but its his office. His voicemail tells me he's out until next Tuesday. He'll probably bitch at Bud's because I didn't contact him the day it arrived.
