small tapered round end of an object?:what:

sounds like the never ending debate of which end of the egg shall be opened for eating.:p

be safe.

I found that the word I oft read but never heard was pronounced Oh-jive. I must confess that I used to think it was pronounced Oh-give just as in
"Ogive me a home where the buffalo roam...." and the ogive of the .270 Win was perfect for dropping antelope at distance.

every hand-loading video I have ever watched says Oh-Jive
,and around here loo-poled is "lea-a-poled" I remember the first time I saw a Strum-Ruger TV add and they said "Sterm-Ruger"

Why it all makes sense now. The ojive is the small tapered end of a round object that touches between the bore and groove diameters. Or an area of depth of about .004-6" at the side of the bullet from front on. Ogive has nothing to do with bullet pofile, shape, tanget, secant, or you name it. But it does have everything to do with the gripping edge of the projectiles. Thanks PS Gamestalker or others lets have a say at Oehler for grins.BestAll

There are a number of good pronouncing dictionaries on the net.

And there is a nice FREE Merriam Webster Dictionary app for your smartphone that has a pronouncing feature. Ogive is in it. Very handy.

A friend says hornaday. With a day at the end. I had to check the spelling, thought I was reading it wrong. Then she said cazool, as in 454. Totally took me by surprise, I again checked the spelling. I won't be checking the spelling on anymore words she doesn't know how to say. Lol

I make every effort to be clear and precise in my use of language. I do not, however, expect others to exercise the same care.*

*I was a high school teacher for 32 years, and I understand the futility of this.
There are people who mispronounce Zeiss? That's pathetic.

OTOH, I've never heard anyone say "ogive." I'd always guessed it was pronouced "oh-jeev." :^P

I first saw the word when I was about seven, circa 1971, describing the nose cone of one of my Estes model rockets.

The only thing about Leupold, is the way they pronounce it in their own commercials....kind of sounds more like Lew-Pold
