Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., with the backing of gun control groups, are drafting a bill that would ban the sale of high-capacity magazines such as the one that was used allegedly Saturday by Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of murdering federal Judge John Roll and trying to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., according to two gun control activists working with McCarthy's staff...Copyrighted material removed..

goodness, they waste no time do they...

do these people honestly have no shame....using a tragedy to push their own agenda

this is the part the sickens me..

"In the wake of these kind of incidents, the trick is to move quickly," said Kristen Rand

they dont even try and hide the fact that they know the must use fear to their advantage.

Kristen Rand is right. The trick is to move quickly and ram through a bill while public hysteria is at a fever pitch and everyone is acting on emotion rather than logical reasoning.

honestly, he probably could've killed almost as many with a factory 10 rd mag. they're just lucky he wasn't a good shot and had no training. it could've been much worse. guess it's time to try and snag a few hi cap mags, since they'll be scarce pretty soon.

2 can play that game. We must hurry and make Full autos legal now. Guys are attacking senators with semi-autos, the only way we can be safe is to drop the full auto restrictions. The key is to move quickly after all.

I have like a dozen of those new in the wrap 33 round glock made mags that I got a smoking deal on for like $20 each about 6 months ago. looks like it may turn out to be a good investment as they may go up in value like they did years ago.

He could have killed as many with a vehicle in a crowed lot, but he didn't he used a gun.

Aw geez, not this <profanity removed, moderator> again.
McCarthy introduces this same bill every session. Every session it becomes news only on gun boards where guys declare the end of the world is at hand. In truth it goes nowhere because there is no support nationally for gun control.

Well this wasn't really unexpected now was it. Always the knee jerk reaction, they are trying to use the headlines to push another AWB of some type through.

The question here is what are we going to do to stop it. Probably about time to start writing more emails/letters/making phone calls.

I had a good idea at work today. Instead of focusing on the equipment he had, we should be focusing on the fact that this was clearly a disturbed individual who should have received help. This is not a gun problem, it is the result of untreated mental illness. His college threw him out because they thought he was a hazard to himself and others. We need a better mental health system so that people like this can get treatment and get better. Either that or if he refused treatment, he could have been found "mentally defective" ;)

you dont seem to understand.....that only makes too much sense to be true....thus it has to be the guns fault this guy was a nut job......

and it doesnt push the govt' agenda of turning us into slave-...umm...err....unarme-.....uhh.....oh!, "good compliant citizens".

Someone skilled with a 5-shot snubbie could also have killed just as many people as this joker. It's an inanity, but one that is being capitalized upon nonetheless. I think it's despicable that the antis have used this tragedy as a springboard for their bogus agenda, and I also think it's disrespectful that some pro 2nd amendment people were talking about defense against Brady on Saturday. Can we at least show some respect for the victims of this tragedy?

But moving forward from sympathies, ban stuff like hi cap magazines, and these idiots are just going to google how to make a few fertilizer or car bombs instead. You can't stop these people no matter what you do.

Also, I was reading that lots of people are pointing the finger at Sarah Palin and right-wing radio hosts for inciting a culture of violence against their opponents. It appears the victims have already become political commodities.

She will be banning that thing that goes up as well! It's absolutely appalling that she would support legislation which is the same type of nonsense legislation which allowed her husband to murdered in a similar situation. She has never considered that he (Her husband) should have been armed but couldn't because of NYC's ludicrous gun control laws.

I ve been telling family & friends, and posting on a variety of gun-related websites that all it will take is one event to unleash POTUS and his anti-gun hoard, and this appears to be that event.:fire:

I'm VERY pro 2nd amendment, but I do wonder just what is the purpose of these extended magazines is. Frankly I always thought they looked ridiculous, but thats just me. Granted a 10 round mag would have been just about as bad.

Just wondering what others think about the mags.

I have a CCW and carry everyday. I own shotguns, rifles, pistols and revolvers. I'm an ex- Navy Submariner and I believe in the US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. And believe me, I surely don't want my rights trampled on by a bunch of do-gooders. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out why we need a 33 round magazine for a handgun that is specifically designed for self-defense. Someone want to enlighten me?

I think the mags make no difference whatsoever with an individual intent on doing harm.

Would this be less of a tragedy if he had used a 10-round magazine and only killed and wounded half as many people?

In this case if he had a ten 10rd mag he may have been stopped sooner. I understand he was reloading when they got to him.

Personally I don't feel I need a 30 rd mag. As far as a ban goes, if there is no law to surrender mags above 10 rd's, it would be ridiculous because people will once again go to preban mags.

They are a tool, nothing more !

So then you don't believe in 30 rd mags period or just in handguns?

It would definately hurt for smaller caliber handguns such as the Keltek PMR-30 (30 round mag.).

I think what most folks worry about is the slippery slope. They say 30 rounds is too much; now when some one goes off their rocker with a 10 or 15 round magazine, why don't we ban those too since no one needs more then a few rounds in one magazine?
