thanks for the thread and lots of info here

i am thinking about either get an ar-15 or a ps90, i think with modern design ps90 should have its advantages over old ar-15, i am a believer of new technology, this is just for some target shooting and PD, and i am not going into any kind of war so long range of ar-15/5.56mm is kinda overkill, and ammo is twice as heavy...
what do you folks think?

nothing wrong with an AR, or the '90 as far as I can tell. Just ask yourself what you want to do with it and which one will suit your needs better.

Me? I'm going for both.

Actually, I wondered while reading your AR thread if you were familiar with the PS90. The thing about the AR is that it isn't really a full power rifle. It's a semi-auto version of an assault rifle, which by definition means it fires an intermediate power cartridge. It's already on the lower end of power compared to a round like the 7.62x51 and you can already carry about 30 rounds of 5.56 to the pound (as compared to about 18 of 7.62x51). The AR is the lightweight solution for most people.
Still, when I handled the PS90 it was very light and handy. Also, the weight is mostly in the stock between your firing hand and your shoulder. They're very quick pointing, even with the 16" barrel.
Another option you might consider is the tried and true M1 Carbine. They only go around five or six pounds and can be had for well under $1500. The round can be thought of as a high powered semi-auto handgun round that pushes a 110 grain bullet around 1900 FPS.
Also, you might check into the Kel-Tec SU16 rifles. They are listed on Kel-Tec's site as only weighing in at 4.7 pounds empty. http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/rifles/su-16c-2/

@goon, i believe as long as it hits even .380 is pretty powerful, that's why i try to find a lightweight weapon that i can handle well and hit accurately and fast, i think 5.56 and 5.7 are potent enough shot from a rifle

My PS90is a keeper. Most definitely a keeper. It has been 100% reliable and accurate as far as I have shot it (85 yards). Capacity is very nice. It is easy handling (my then 19 year old daughter did outstanding with it her first time shooting) and ammo around here is plentiful and very reasonably priced.

My only issue with it has to do with the variation that I acquired. Mine is a tri-rail (no factory optics). The top rail has enought room for my ARMS QD mount and red dot, and nothing else. BUIS are out of the question. I have decided to solve the problem of back-up sights by mounting a Viridian green laser on one of the side rails although I'm not a laser guy. This can then be "co-witnessed" with the red dot. If the red dot goes out the Viridian laser can then be viewed through the red dot or otherwise.

I believe that the factory optics version has back-up battle sights built into it that would be of some use.

I was talking to a buddy of mine about SBRing mine but he said that shortening the barrel of the PS90 can lead to difficulties and can be a bit tricky. Next time I talk to him I will ask him to expand on that, but I would trust his opinion and experience. To tell you the truth, considering the overall size of the PS90 I really have very little problem with the longer barrel.

I love mine. I take it out with me and it fits in my Jeep perfectly vs my AR (which is bulkier to pack). I am having mine SBR'd by a guy in OR that does it frequently. I just need to get to work on the paperwork and get it shipped out.

I have around 1500 rounds through mine without a failure, and it is wickedly accurate considering what it is. It is super clean, and barely needs to be cleaned after a day of shooting. Ammo is no more expensive than any other non-NATO surplus round. Heck, it's as cheap to shoot as my .45 and AR with brass ammo.

I am excited to SBR it so it will pack up a little smaller, and so I can put a suppressor on it and still keep it in its little case. Between my FiveseveN and the ps90 it's a great thing to take out and about camping (though a .22 is more useful camping). I have it with 6 mags (300 rounds), and the pistol with 3 total mags on me (60 rounds) and it still all weighs less than my sig556 and 4 mags... I'll take light and easy to take care of over heavy battle rifle if I'm going out somewhere for a couple days for leisure. If I get outgunned then I should have been more careful planning my trip....

Great gun, considering what it is. It is not a front line battle rifle, but it is a very effective weapon and a hoot to shoot! Having common piston and carbon ammo is a plus too... Like a modern version of the old lever rifles that shoot .45 LC.

Oh yeah, one negative... If you have a beer gut, the spent cartridges eject straight down onto your belly and leave a black area on your shirt that remind you to take it easy at Ponderosa on the way home...
