I believe I have come to a decision to buy a Taurus PT 740 in the near future after debating that and the TCP (which will come later). I like how it fits in my hand, I can easily hit the manual safety, and I like how it looks. I have also heard a lot of good things about it.
My only qualm is the slide finish. I want a dark gun, nothing shiny, as it will be for concealed carry, but at the same time I don't want a gun that will rust if I get sweaty carrying it. The perfect solution seems to come from the TCP. There is a black Stainless finish version of it that I really like and seems like it would suit my needs if Taurus made the 740 in that finish. I cannot find them anywhere. Has anyone seen one with this finish or have any suggestions for which to get if they just don't make it? Which is more important for CCW, a dark gun, or rust proof finish?

If you comport yourself in typical civilian clothing, what difference does the color of your pistol make?

Simply to make it more concealable. Should my shirt ride up and I not notice it, a black slide would be less obvious than a shiny Stainless slide. At least that was my logic, correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, that kinda depends on what surrounds it. If you're a white guy, wearing a light colored shirt and khaki pants, nothing is gonna stand out more than a jet black pistol. See what I mean? Besides, how much of the slide is really visible while it's in the holster?

Taurus 740 Slim Wins Golden Bullseye Award
MIAMI - The Taurus 740 SLIM has won the 2011 Golden Bullseye Award for "Handgun of the Year" by American Rifleman, a 125-year-old flagship publication of the National Rifle Association. The award will be presented at an invitation-only breakfast during the 2011 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, April 29-May 1, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

"This much-coveted award, now in its ninth year, is a symbol of excellence, innovation and quality in firearms, accessories and related equipment. Our congratulations to the winners," said Joe H. Graham, Executive Director of NRA Publications.

The 740 SLIM's compact design and meager weight of 19 ounces make it a must-have for those who prefer concealment carry. Offering potent .40-caliber firepower with 6+1 shot capacity, the SLIM is sure to provide top-quality performance.

Available in matte stainless or blue finish, this handsome gun features a 3.2-inch barrel, a newly designed trigger safety and a lightweight Polymer frame. The SLIM sports a crisp single action/double action trigger pull and a finger indexing Taurus Memory Pad™ along the frame. Like all Taurus firearms, the unique onboard Taurus Security System® allows users to securely lock the gun using an inconspicuous key-lock. Leave it to Taurus to make the most heralded concealed carry semi-autos in company history even better.

"It is a tremendous honor to receive such a coveted award," said Bob Morrison, President and CEO of Taurus International. "Everyone put in a great deal of effort designing the SLIM to meet our customer's needs and we are proud to be recognized by such an established magazine as American Rifleman."

I own Taurus guns and a PT709. Not the 740.

I do sweat excessively in summer weather like most of America has been having. Yet I bought a blued PT709. The blued finish has not rusted and I take good care of the finish to make sure. This is true for any gun. Even stainless is not totally rust proof.

There are several ways to deal with this.

It depends on the type holster and the person carrying it. A lot of holsters can be had with sweat shields.

If a excessive sweater or in hot weather it's a good idea to keep a silcon or lightly oiled gun cloth, in a zipper bag, and wipe the gun down several times a day, during wear and after.

Use an IWB holster with shield if needed. These do a good job of keeping persperation from the gun.

Buy the stainless model anyway.

If you carry the gun behind the hip as most of us should, have a good cover garment, and use CCW etiquette, there should be little or no problem in having the gun show.

When reaching for something do not reach with the arm on the side where the gun is. Use the opposite arm and be careful not to stretch too much.

When bending do it from the squat position. Bend the knees toward the floor and reach that way. Do not bend from the waist to get something.

Should the covering garment come up and expose the gun observant people will see it no matter what. Yes, black does help somewhat hide the fact, but is a for sure thing.

I've observed that most people are not that observant and go about their lives completely oblivious to most if not all things going on around them. In most cases the gun will not be observed, but why take the chance at all of exposing it?

A already stated above light colors or sheer material is a bad idea for shirt wear. There are some minor exceptions to this such as tatical short or long sleeved shirts by .5.11 or Woolrich.

The stainless steel version of the PT740 does not have a polished bright finish.
If you go to www.taurususa.com and click on Pistols, and then click on Slim Pistols, you'll see what I mean.

I own many stainles steel pistols and revolvers by Taurus and Ruger, yet no one has ever been able to tell when I am carrying.

The PT740 can be carried in a concealed holster made by Bulldog Holsters. It's supposed to look like a cell phone carrier.

Who'd know?

The stainless steel version is a solid bet.

I think you have me convinced. I was planning on carrying iwb at 3:30-4:30 with a shirt over it anyway. I didn't realize that the stainless would not be shiny, I've only had opportunity to handle the blue finish. Makes sense for a carry gun. Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by CCW etiquette? Just common sense stuff, or is there a list of things you should and shouldn't do when carrying?
