Aside from being a fun range toy, and sharing mag compatability with my primary carry pistol (G17), what does this offer for me? I can make COM hits fairly quickly out to 100 yds with my G17, which is the maximum range I'd ever want to use a pistol round at.

Compared to a pistol caliber carbine, an underfolder AK would be a much better (and effective) choice if a compact carbine was needed.

I suppose if one had the romantic notion of using the same ammo in their long gun and handgun, it might make sense--but not with 9mm.

Well, I guess that the 9mm ammo costs less than the rifle ammo, and the gun is probably lighter because it has to handle a smaller round. Recoil is also lower.

Really, it's your money, so do what you want with it. I don't like the looks of them, but if you are interested, study up.

Aside from range fun and a mid-range option for those who can't make COM shots at 100 yards with their pistol (myself included), not much else.

That said, I'm trying to change my 5.56 to 45acp. Cheaper ammo, A LOT more practice, more effective regardless of the caliber. I'd rather hit with a 45 as opposed to miss with a 50BMG (or .223 whatever).

I don't see any reason for non-hunters to need a effective weapon at 300-600 yards aside from competition and just to "see if you can". I don't need it. I sure would feel safer in a SHTF scenario if I could stay safe up to 100 or 150 yards though.

The Sub2K is alot of fun. For those of us in hurricane prone parts of the country, it's folded size makes it super easy to throw in a bug-out bag or backpack. Ammo is cheap and plentiful and it's fairly accurate out to 100 yards or so. Mine was also very reliable and I pumped a few thousand rounds of LancerCustomAmmo reloaded 9mm brass thru the thing without ever a jam or failure.

It's a SHTF gun plain and simple. For range sessions I'd rather spend the extra for a Beretta CX4 carbine, they are nice and very accurate for a handgun caliber carbine. They also have mag interchangeability with most beretta sidearms. I've only shot one in 9mm, but I'd love to try the .45.

My guess is that the great majority of shooters couldn't hit a tractor standing unsupported at 100 yards with any pistol. Add to that whatever circumstances require you to make hits at 100 yards and you probably can cull a lot more from the list. With my sub-2K even I can do it.

Like it or not a pistol caliber carbine is better than a pistol for engaging targets at over 15 or 20 yards. Fairly significant velocity increases lead to more horsepower, and that ignores the longer sighting plane making hits easier. My sub 2000 also fits very nicely in a standard soft side briefcase with a 17 round mag loaded, and four 33 round spares. I can carry it thus and no one will know, and with the single point sling I can fold it and wear it under a coat in the winter. I've actually practiced that, and while much slower than drawing a pistol it works ok.

No weapon is perfect for all uses, sometimes you want options. I have various pistols from .25 ACP to .40 S&W, the Sub2K in 9mm, a couple of SU16's in .223, a heavy varmit type AR in .223, a medium weight AR in .50 Beowulf, and a FN49 in 8mm that could all see self defense use in the appropriate circumstances.

The more I think about it, it may be a great "accessory" for my G17. I have a 25yd. indoor pistol/rifle range 10 minutes from my house that I frequent. I can't use steel cased ammo with my AK there, and this may be a blast with my 9mm ammo and mountain of G17 mags.

Too bad that there doesn't appear to be enough muzzle to thread....

For fitting inside briefcases... DUH!

Went to the range the other day and a buddy that owns a KT Sub2k was there. He had it, a P22 and a G17 all in the same hard side briefcase (so he could lock it and be legal) with two 33 round mags and several standard mags in the lid.

Zombies beware.

No plans on making this thing in a 45acp version right? :(

I've got the Ruger PC9 carbine to match my P89. Mag interchangeability for SHTF reasons is why I have it. 50 to 100 yds is about the range I would expect to use it. It's a snap to keep all shots COM at those ranges with it. If I owned a Glock in 9mm or .40 I would invest in the Keltec Carbine to match. As it is I own a a Ruger 9mm pistol so I went with the Ruger 9mm carbine. I just wish Ruger had made one in .45ACP/P90 mags too. I'd snap one up tomorrow!. :)

Well, when you look at "other" possible uses for the sub2000, it becomes a desirable weapon.

In the world of SHTF, you can equip it with a silencer, heavy subsonic ammo, and a good quality optical sight. Makes for a great close range assassination weapon to take out key personnel or sentries in the darkness of the night. Plus it can fold in half for easy storage.

Well, if you can hit a pie plate at 100 yards with a glock, the purpose of a sub2k is clear: hand it to your comrade in arms who needs a long gun to replicate your feat of arms.

It is also a great way to expose others to the fun of shooting without breaking their shoulder or making them feel silly for not being able to use a pistol accurately right away.

My 18 yo and 6 year old think highly of it.

And, it really is just fun!

Well the only gun I really need is my XD9 for self defense. Other than that, all my guns serve as fun toys that go bang. I figure that's enough reason to own any gun.

Now, I looked at a Sub2K for a compact longarm. I can't own a pistol yet. I was looking at the ultra compactness of the Sub2K- it is the smallest longarm that is not NFA, period. I wanted to be able to toss it into a backpack or shove it under my car seat.

Basically, it fills the range between a pistol and a rifle, with compactness in between.

For those of you who own them...have they been reliable? With FMJ? With Hollow points?

Frankly, the only justifiation for any gun is that you want it. This does seem like a decent SHTF rifle and a great complement to the G17...if it's a reliable weapon.

And, for those of you who decry 9mm...how many volunteers to be shot with 9mm ball ammo (we'll do it on Box O'Truth)?

I came to the same conclusion as the original poster. I have one, but I am better served with one of my AK folders.

I can see 2 'nitches'
-If you have a specific max size where the AK is too large.
-If you shoot at an indoor range that is 'pistol only'.

It has been reliable with FMJ (But not with Blazer Al. The cases get crushed just like in a STEN gun.)

I need to sell that sucker...

sub 2000 reliability

I have 2, both in the Glock configeration , one in G17 the other G19. Both have fed and fired all types of hollow points, ball, even silver bear steel case. The little Sub is a winner in my book.

Purpose of Kel-Tec Sub2000 Carbine?

This sounds like a question that would be posted on the Brady Bunch Forums... not THR. There is only one reason to ask a question like this.

Why have sports cars? Why have marble counter tops? Why play Golf? Why Chevy, why Ford? Coke? Pepsi? Dr. Pepper? Sprite?

Everyone has different needs, tastes and desires. Why ask why?

The answer will always be "Because I want it."

If you don't know why, try it for yourself. If it is not your cup of tea, try something else. As long as you like it, who cares? I promise not to make fun or ridicule your choices.

Reasons to have one?

As far as reliablity, mine has been pretty reliable. I get a few FTE's with certain brands but with Wolf and WWB its 100%.

without question the carbine will have more power and better accuracy. the same question often comes up with marlin 1894c .357 / shoot one and you'll see why it's hard to keep them in stock

Aside from being a fun range toy

Well since about 90% + of all firearms usage is at the range for fun, I don't see anything wrong with having a range toy . :D
