I just recently bought a Colt Python and have been having problems when shooting DA. The gun is in good shape and hits um home every time shooting SA. I've taken the gun down and given it a thorough cleaning, and noted that the main spring and hammer do not look like they have been tampered with. When pulled through DA the cylinder locks up with no slack and the firing pin hits the middle of the primer. Could it be that the main spring is just giving up? The serial number indicates that the gun was built in 1980.

Yes. Out of 6 it will sometimes only fire 3 on the first hit. I have tried several different types/brands of ammo in it and it always does the same thing. I've also had other people try firing it just to make sure I wasn't doing something to cause it.

Likely, someone attempted a home-done "trigger job" to get a "better" pull and bent the spring slightly.

I'd suggest installing a new spring.

Also, inspect the firing pin by pushing it forward with a punch.
Check the tip for chips or unusual wear, and make sure it moves freely forward and springs back.

For new springs, you can send the gun in to Colt for one and a complete check up, or you can buy springs here AS LONG, as you know EXACTLY how to work on the gun. Pythons are just too valuable these days to risk:

Thanks dfariswheel. The firing pin is in good shape. I have ordered a new mainspring. Hopefully thats all it is and she'll be back to 100% in no time!
