quality compass and watch

I'm in the market for a quality mechanical compass and a quality mechanical watch.


Each must have good accuracy and superior durability to shock and rough conditions. Waterproof of course.

Self winding watch would be preferable as long as it as durable as a wind up. Flat crystal on the watch if possible. I seem to be death on domed crystal.

Modern makes are okay but I am also willing to search for outstanding examples of days of yore.

Really can't go wrong with either of these watches if you need mechanical, cheap, and durable.

As for compasses--there are hundreds of options. Just depends on what you want. I like Silva Rangers personally.

Look for a sapphire crystal on the face -- hardness of 9.

I ended up buying a Hamilton Khaki Chronograph; have also owned an Ollech and Wajs and a Oris that were high quality.

On the compass, really almost any of the name brand orienteering compasses are good quality and serviceable. If you're looking for a marching compass, the Cammenga is the way to go. You know, military lensatic compasses ain't bad at all. I might even have one (tritium dials and what-not) that you can buy.

I second the Oris watch, great quality for the money.

Compass- I like the Silva wrist one very well. Not extremely accurate, however, it has met my needs, keeps me hands free and I never was without it when I needed it. Also, great at night in the bush since my hands were still free to keep the brush out of my face.

Limes, Aristo (have one of these) Ollech and Wajs, there are loads of others but these I recall from my hunt about a year ago.

I love military watches. My Aristo is titanium cased with a ETA 2824-2 movement and a flat sapphire crystal. Probably cost me less than 200 US.

I just use a regular old Silva map compass. For a watch, I have a vintage 40's or 50's Omega Seamaster.

I love my Hamilton Khaki watch. Its simple and reliable.


As far as a compass is concerned I would go with a Brunton 8099.

I have this ^^ one. It's a good accurate military issue mechanical. It's a little on the small side, though.. Also, you can save a little money by looking on Ebay. The price on this link lists it for $90, I picked mine up for $52 NIB on da' Bay..
