Thanks for the input. I'll hit the gun show this weekend and check out the best options. I'll let y'all know what I end up with!

Posts: 140 Sounds like you want two different uppers: a standard 16'' and a heavy 20-24''.

That way, you'll have two uppers that fill their respective roles very well, as opposed to one upper that's only so-so at any one thing. Later, you could buy another lower and tailor it to whichever upper you choose to keep on it.

That's the only way to be content!

I tried to get a single AR to do all the different applications of tactical shooting.

Bottom line - its impossible in one rifle...

And it sounds to me that you like the fluting more for looks than function.
That's OK...precisely why I got the fluting...but the faster cooling helps!

I started with a RRA carb entry - 16 in Brl, Hogue 2 stage trigger -
a good entry level carbine with decent accuracy when using either
Black Hills ammo or reloads ( for me, BH 69g MK blue or red box)

Got interested in accuracy - got a Krieger barrel, match chamber...
picked up a DPMS lo-Pro upper, JP/VTAC FF tube, and used the RRA lower.

Its a tack driver!! Truly a .5 MOA from the bench.

Get your carbine...the rest is the normal learning curve and evolution that we all go thru...

good luck!

Lets get real here...Do you really want to learn something?

first lesson = Learn to shoot
second lesson = its whats inside the barrel that matters...not outside...ever.
third lesson = triggers matter
Four = Nothing goofier at the range than shooting a rifle that looks like a shopping cart of "I like to play Army" aftermarket products.
Five = Its an AR15...dont waste too much money on anything but a well thought through build up from a quality lower receiver.
Six = If your planning on just sitting there and pulling the trigger pretending your semi is a full auto....get a .22...one with cheap barrels as getting a good barrel and then playing Rambo is just plain idiotic.

4 rails? who cares....
Bull Barrels....for what????
Fluted Barrels....for what???
CQB.....????

This is not a flame...but accurate shooting is a skill, supported by thoughtful quality firearms, and its time somebody pointed you in the right direction.
Just my .02

You have to understand that some people are just not like you ;). You can take your shooting seriously as you like, but for a lot of people it's for fun.

second lesson = its whats inside the barrel that matters...not outside...ever.
What if the wind is howling outside the barrel

Four = Nothing goofier at the range than shooting a rifle that looks like a shopping cart of "I like to play Army" aftermarket products.
That depends on who you are. I think flashlights on a rifle that doesn't see the light of the moon EVER is frickin stupid. I also think that forward vert grips are very comfy and have a nice feel.

Five = Its an AR15...dont waste too much money on anything but a well thought through build up from a quality lower receiver.
You say that like they are worthless if they aren't built with the best parts available. What defines a quality lower receiver and who makes them?

Six = If your planning on just sitting there and pulling the trigger pretending your semi is a full auto....get a .22...one with cheap barrels as getting a good barrel and then playing Rambo is just plain idiotic.
Again, your opinion. He/I/We can do whatever He/I/We want(s) with his/my/our gun, weather that is shooting the crap out of it as fast as we can or driving nails with the buttstock. It's his/my/our rifle that he/I/we paid for.

Opinion

Bull Barrels....for what????
So the barrel doesn't heat up as fast when shooting a lot, a.k.a. varmint hunting. Also, makes the rifle heavier so the felt recoil is less.

Fluted Barrels....for what???
To get the benefits of a heavy rigid barrel without the weight. Also, they look cool.

CQB.....????
It's an acronym for close quarters battle. Obviously you have never been charged by a jack rabbit.

This is not a flame...
Well, it wasn't very informative either; too much opinion.

I see where you are going with everything you said, but seriously man, take it easy. You can't get everyone to take shooting as seriously as you do; some people just like to plink stuff. They put a whole bunch of crap on their rifles because their buddies think it looks cool. That doesn't make them wrong or bad people, it just makes them goof balls with too much money.

Just remember that things seem the way that they do because of your perspective. Someone with a different perspective will see things differently than you and, most likely, disagree with you. Doesn't mean they are wrong, just different.

If you like the looks of it, then go for it. Nothing sucks more then to buy something on someone elses opinion that your not happy with. If the bull barrel is what you think you need because it might help you shoot better, then do it. Some apects of good shooting is feeling confident in the equipment your using. If it makes you feel good, then you usually shoot better. If your not happy with it or you just don't feel right about it, then some of that will reflect in your shooting. I ahve seen this when teaching new recruits to shoot. I noticed when I let them choose the gun they wanted to shoot they seemed to feel more confident and shot better. I had a girl one time who complained about a gun not shooting right and she was throwing all her rounds. I took the gun and went behind the firing line. I grabbed a rag and wiped the outside down with some CLP and handed it back to her and said I changed it out for a "fresh" one. she said thanks and shot a very impressive high score. It was the same gun. I hope you enjoy what ever you buy and enjoy shooting ever chance you get. That is my .02 cents...

That's why I asked the question.

Four = Nothing goofier at the range than shooting a rifle that looks like a shopping cart of "I like to play Army" aftermarket products.

Never said I would be spending all my time at the range.

4 rails? who cares....

Me. I'm going to put stuff on it.

and its time somebody pointed you in the right direction.

So far I think they have been. Again, it's why I started this thread to begin with.

I plan to use this rifle for anything from plinking to hog, coyote, and varmit hunting. Some hunts (hog for example) will be at night, hence the flashlight.;)
Although I'm proficient with handguns, and have some experience with some simple rifles, I needed to learn more about AR's (still learning). The "stuff" I'm going to put on there is not so it can look cool (even though I think it will :D), I actually have a practical use for it.

Hey everyone, thanks again for the input (keep it coming). I'll keep y'all informed of what I get. Believe me I'll have plenty more questions to ask as I keep building my arsenal!

Accurate shooting is a learned skill.

The question he asks....stands. He is right...as he himself states, he doesn't know enough to prioritize his purchase past "4 rails" and an odd question about stripping off a new barrel to.....replace it with a bull barrel or flutted barrel..one he hopes will give him more accuracy.

He wants to actually learn something. That is different from the softy goosey "its ok to do what makes you feel good" baloney. There are legions of folks that can hold his "fun" hand while he struggles to make a good first purchase.

He ask to get opinions, and mine is one of many...but it is mine.. and it may make some unhappy. There are alot of folks that are too busy not learning to be much good to anybody else.

If accuracy is his question....my answer to him stands. Gosh..is that what CQB means? No kidding...so cool...in a manly sort of way.

As to wiping the woman's barrel down and having her shoot better, great. I'll remember that next time I'm competing.

Im having fun here..if your reading something else...its just a guy trying to get the facts out...fins...extra mass...rails...etc...etc...is not the things he should be concentrating on for his first rifle...if he wants accuracy.

Regarding all the talk here of multiple uppers.. do you have to get a new bolt for each upper, or could you use the same bolt in each upper?

As long as the upper is the same caliber, you should be able to use the old bolt. I'd check headspace to be sure, but I'm paranoid.

fins...extra mass...rails...etc...etc...is not the things he should be concentrating on for his first rifle...if he wants accuracy.

True. I plan to do A LOT of practice with this gun. I'm not a novice shooter with a rifle (I'm decent), just with an AR. Now, since I can afford the extras I'm definitely getting them.

After all the insight I won't be getting the bull barrel (good thing I asked). Down the line for longer range I'll look at some bolt actions maybe.

Tell the mall ninja I said hi. Unless you are the mall ninja... :scrutiny:

By the way, he's going to be hunting hogs at night so he needs a rail :neener:

Start with a basic setup and then look to add on...everyone else does. But in all seriousness, keep in mind there is not one rifle that will suit all needs so figure out where you are going to compromise this for that and come up with a config that works for you.

I would not swap bolts between uppers/rifles. Inconsistent wear can cause headspace problems. The bolt should stay with the upper/rifle.
