Question about pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade (MD)

I just picked up my third pre-64, this one a Super Grade made in 1950. It is all original except for the G&H side mount. Its condition is near new except for the cracking found on the stock finish due to age. I took it apart to check for any defects before I bought it and found the stock inletting to be everybit as good as any custom gun I've handled. Truly a gorgeous gun.

I hope this forum can clarify one thing for me. This gun has fleur de lis checkering rather than the more traditional checkering pattern. I've never seen this type of checkering on a Super Grade and want to know if it signifies anything in particular.

I'd love to see pictures. Fleur de lis checkering was never on any production guns unless special order. The other interesting thing is Winchester did not use finishes that cracked. Winchester used Duco brand lacquer over an oil bases stain to finish their stocks. They don't crack but the lacquer will pull off the stain in places and you'll have patches without shine. Anyone familiar with Pre 64's knows what I'm describing. I finish woodwork for a living and I can tell you one of the biggest virtues of lacquer is that it stays flexible and does not crack. I've seen special order guns of that era and they had lacquer over stain finishes just like the standard guns.

Also need to know if you have the widow's peak recoil plate and what kind of grip cap is on it. A picture would be great.

I spoke to the owner of the gun shop where I got the rifle and found out some interesting facts. The previous owner is the original owner and used to own the company Winchester Repeating Arms contracted with to provide their sales force. The rifle was made by the Winchester Custom Shop and presented to this individual. The G&H side mount, the fleur de lis checkering and the upgraded wood were the only changes made. Other than those three upgrades the gun is a standard Super Grade. The gun shop owner says he will put me in contact with the original owner (last name Stump) who has apparently promised to provide a letter of authenticity. I also plan to query Winchester to see if they can run the serial number and provide me with a copy of the company records. I'll let you know what I find. In the mean time I'm going to post detailed photos this weekend.
