That rifle what I would call “used” condition. It’s been a hunting rifle. Nothing I saw in those .000025 megapixel images cannot be fixed with some time, some elbow grease, and only a sprinkle of coin.

If the action is smooth, locks up tight, and the chamber/bore is good, you got a nice hunting rifle. Clean it up too much and you might not want to take it to the woods. Congratulations buddy. I’d own that in a heartbeat.

Thanks, it's cleaning up better then I thought, the bluing is better then it looked in the shop. There's a small pit spot on the weaver scope but I think I can get most of it off may have to touch up with cold blue. I stripped the hole gun last night everything looks good and did a good cleaning. The stock looks like it will be easier to clean up as well.
Bore and chamber look good from what I can see, I only have a few rounds of 270 around but it feeds perfectly. Action is smooth and even the blue in spotts it wears fast are perfect bluing.

Got the stock stripped last night, using some goof off worked ok I'm just to cheap to get the good stuff lol.

I was correct about most of the scratches being just in the surface finish, there were a few tiny spots were the scratch compressed the wood. Literally only took a minute to steam them up, no cracked fibers.

there's one spot on the pistol grip, I don't think I could even call it a chip. More like a rub, but it's hardly Noticeable now.

I wet the wood a few times and brushed off the wood fuzz with 0000 steak wool. The started the first coat of boiled linseed oil.

Very nice and very familiar!

I have my Grandfather's .270 M70. It is an immediate post-war build, and still has the rather awkward pre-war safety variation. It also has the Pachmayr side-flip mount and what I believe is a Lyman Alaskan 2.5X scope. My Grandfather purchased it used, as it was the personal rifle of the sporting goods department manager at McGuckin's Hardware in Boulder during the mid to late 50's. It went on A LOT of CO and western hunting trips for the next 40 years, and it shows. My Grandpa would get upset anytime somebody flipped the scope mount, thinking that it would not re-zero.

Irreplaceable at any price.

I think Pachmayer called that mount a "Low Swing" I had one on an early Remington 700 once. It worked fine & returned to zero every time, but mine wasn't a side mount.
I had a cool flip mount on my last Remington 742, think it was a weaver mount. I liked it since I like Remington sights, that gun shoot amazing but after a 100 rounds it started chewing it's self up. I got it from the original owner nib, and he never shot it.

I see a very similar m70 on gun broker it's got two bids up to $1200 and 5 days left. Has a very similar pachmayr side mount, and a weaver scope. It's the same year as mine, wood looks about the same but don't know if the gb one has the proper read sight.

Either way seeing it being that much makes me happy even tho I didn't buy this one to flip selling it.

In the late 80's or early 90's I bought a pre-64 30-06 w/pristine metal and tenderly "hunted" wood at the Houston gun show. No scope or mounts. Got a real deal on it on a Sunday afternoon shortly before closing time that I couldn't turn down ($400). I'd say condition was very comparable to yours, Troy, so you should feel pretty good about your deal. ;)

Put a 3X9 Burris FF II on it and picked up a rough stock at another gun show in order to build up a cheek piece and raise the comb w/Bondo and fiber glass. Gave the stock a coat of flat black Krylon and flat clearcoat...........

........and my grandson has taken a number of deer, nilgai, hogs and coyotes with it.

Metal is still pristine and the original stock sits in a corner, still tenderly hunted. IIRC the original stock had a Pachmyer recoil pad added when I bought it.

By the way, those two holes in side of rear ring are factory drilled, as were the top scope base holes in front and rear rings.

hps

With tax I got this one for just under $600 I feel I did good. I'd like a spare stock myself, some one had a stock cheap on here for sale of its the proper one I may buy it. Some nice animals there, some day I'll have money for Texas hunt.

Best pictures I could get with this tablet and the overcast today, if the finish on the stock or metal look funny the hole gun got some gun was all over.

I'm happy now it looks, I'll see about a new rear sight someday since this one is a bit buggered and I think this gun should have the win 22G rear sight.

I need to order the proper sight hood, this one is one off a marlin. I'd like to get bases for the top just in case this weaver side mount has any trouble. And I need to order the broken part for the Lyman 57 wjs peep I have.

loonwulfs buddy is working on making a sling for this rifle, I mentioned what is like but he have full artistic licence on it.

Well I can say it shoots pretty good now, shot these and 75-80 yards, the 100 yard line was in direct sun. I had checked with my bore sighter and it looked good. Shot one standing at 25 yards and was were I aimed so went back to the 75 ish spot, no bench so shot prone but not to steady.

I had the scope on 3 power and did not turn it to 5 I'll try that on a different day from the bench.

Only targets I had were 10 meter nra air rifle targets, the black circle are 1.200" . Sorry for the target being all shot up, the other groups are from some steel case from my cz. Had some hornady 130 sst superformance so shot 3 they are the top center black circle. About .800 ctc.

Next were 3 Winchester 130 power point.center row just below first group. Those are just at 1.000" shot my cz to let the barrel cool. Last were just 2 shots of rem 130 corlokt I had left that was just under 1.500" my last 270 didn't like them either.

I had a few 150 corlokts but forgot to try they.

I was shocked the rifle was still zeroed and more so since I had everything off to clean. I've very happy with the group's, especially since this was all factory stuff. I'd say I may be a 1 or 1.5 moa gun, not bad for its age and low power scope.

Great looking rifle , and good shooting . Looks like you have a winner ,off to a great start . I like seeing these fine old rifles being used , they have soul
It cleaned up nice, my buddy I shot with today though it has a different stock and was surprised how well it came out. I was hoping the scope would work happy so far it's working fine.

That's not bad at all!

Especially considering, you're not shooting from a real rest, and factory ammo with a lower power scope.
Ya I don't think it's to bad, the scopes still pretty clear given its age, there's some stuff on the lens on the inside but it's working. Maybe of day I'll take it apart to clean and see about purging with the proper gas. Think it's $150 for a cleaning from that one place but like 8 months wait.
