Well tomorrow I'll be picking up my first pre 64 m70, I've had post 64 70s and my dad had pre 64s but this one is mine.
I got it for what I think is a good deal, it needs some cleaning up but should make a nice deer rifle.

it's a 270win
has a weaver kv 60 looks very clear and may have a small rust spot but hard to see in the gun shop
it has a pachmayr tipping side mount, this kills the value some to a collector.

the stock needs to be stripped, whatever finish is on it is peeling and has scratches but the wood looks fine, checkering looks perfect.

Bore looked good, I'm thinking it maybe a transition gun since the front sight is machined into the barrel. Bluing looked fine as Well.

I'll see how it shoots some day I need to pickup some ammo.
I'll have some pictures after I pick it up tomorrow.

Don't discount the collector value just yet. You would be surprised what many of them are going for these days. When you get around to stripping the stock, think seriously about using tung oil as a new finish. Easy to apply, can be reduced with mineral spirits and produces a fantastic looking gun that is easily touched up from hunting scratches, etc. Mucho congrats on a good find.

Thanks, I was going to use boiled linseed oil, always worked for me.

Find a local teenager and get him/her/non-binary it to take some photos. This one deserves it!
Hey hey I'm only 30 lol, a new phone is on the shortlist tho. Like my ruger 77 7x57 the cracked stock finish make it look like a pos, luckily they come out nice and allows me to get guns I normally can't afford.

Looked up Winchester used lacquer, anything that works best to strip it. I've used goof off before and worked fine.

I use Citristrip. I put that **** on everything :p

Seriously, it’s very effective, doesn’t smell like I’m cooking meth, and takes the finish off everything I’ve tried it on. Then I finish with Zep to get the wood completely clean and dry before reapplying oil and finish.

Any m70 guys know, it have the rear flip down sight similar to what's on a ruger 10/22 I thought that was for the feather weights.

Seems like you mentioned it was a transition pre to post war.
Serial under 66,000 would have had the 22G rear sight in the boss unless the rifle
had been D&Ted at the factory IIRC.

In my experience, barrel dates (located under the barrel at the receiver) are usually the year before the
receiver's serial date.
The earliest transition guns showed more variation to that practice.
So maybe share the barrel date with the 12,xxx serial?

We all like pictures!

I can't remember the serial number but think it was140000 or so, the shop said it was a 1950. It has the later tang I don't think the rear ring had holes for a scope base tho. The scope was in the way and only looked at it long enough to decide I'll buy it. I will pull the action when I pick it up.

I don't know enuff if its a transition gun, but I thought the solid front sight ramp were pre war or transitional guns. The rear sight has the bulge were the barrel was machined.

I'll have to see if I can get any of the goof off didn't work.

I wish I had the money, maybe in a few weeks after I finished this next job at work. The same shop has a pre war 70 36 or 39 i can't remember, it's a 257rob has the shsnovel forend and the raise comb, I didn't look at it tho didn't want to look since I would not have the money lol. That was $975, didn't see what scope.
