I’m another user of Citristrip. Put it on thick and let it work it’s magic. Good Ol TruOil is a fine stain for walnut. I put three or four coats on a walnut stocked 7mm Wby. I think the TruOil is a stain-linseed oil blend. I have also put three coats of linseed oil followed a few days by three coats of satin finish tung oil. That is a tough finish and a good looking one too.
I’m thinking your 270 Win is going to like 140 grain bullets the most. Please keep us updated.

I'll see once I get the wood stripped, I shouldn't have to sand anything hopefully. The wood looks to shrunken some around The top of the butt plate, but it's 70 years old. I'll see what I can get for bullets may try a box of ammo, Fortunately there are 270 bullets at many shops here. My last 270 loved 150s.

Wow, your pics are fuzzy when you blow them up, might wanna wipe the excitement off your camera lens first...
that's about the best I can get out off the camera on this tablet lol. The kids just had lunch and made a mess on the table, should have wiped it down but guys were so Anxious to see the gun lol.

It's a pachmayr tipping base, they were pretty common. You see them more on spotters made from surplus rifles. Nice you can tip the scope away to use the sights.

I pulled the action, everything looking fine, barrel is marked 50 270 on the bottom.
The floorplate was not sitting properly there was some gap in the middle, see if its still there when I put it together.

Nice rifle, Troy! Been a long time since I had a pre-64 out of the stock, but IIRC, there is a notch in one end of the magazine box and putting it in upside down will not allow it to seat properly. But I could be mis-remembering as W used to say. :) Might be another bolt gun????

Regards,
hps

Sounds like a great idea, just can't believe I've never seen one before.

it will make a fine deer rifle I'm not afraid to use because it's to collectible.

Great looking classic pre-64 Winchester Model 70! Once you refinish the rifle, I wouldn't worry about its collector value either. The rifle is a long way from mint, is not chambered for a rare cartridge and after-market drilled holes don't help its monetary worth to a serious collector. Your Model 70 is just like I want them: in good condition but I don't have to use white gloves to hunt with it. Hell, Mr. O'Connor hunted Dall sheep with Al Bieson stocked Model 70s!

I don’t know how you feel about the missing hood for the front sight but I always liked the looks of them. Did I read your only in your 30s? If I had young eyes and owned this rifle it would have a quality peep sight. Hell if I owned it with 65 year old eyes it would wear a peep:) Its a fine rifle and I know you’ll have her shipshape in no time. Good to see a young man appreciate a rifle that ain’t black:)

I like to have hoods on the sight, most seem to take them off. I'll see if I can find one of it one I have fits. I think I have a peep didn't look yet tho.

Ya I don't like having a gun t hats to nice, or it would never see the woods. I don't mind the holes in the side, there for a cool period mount and there straight lol. The rear sight looks like it may have been hit or something if sits a little crooked when down, but looks fine when up. The bluing is better then I thought so it should come out nice.

Dude,

Just a heads up on that tip over side mount. If that’s a Griffin and Howe it’s worth some bucks. I pulled a non tip over G&H off of a Pre 64 .375 H&H. I had a custom restorer pay me like $200 for it. The G&H’s are rare and valuable.

They aren’t in huge demand but when you find someone who wants one they’ll pay.

Also

A good gunsmith can fill those holes and blue to match. If he’s good you’ll not be able to tell they were ever there.

And that’s a really cool M70 BTW!

na it's just a pachmayr tipper I've seen the g&h and they are cool tho. I'll probably just keep the gun like this for now, I'll keep a eye out for a top base tho.

Filling the holes is no problem but I would just put thread protectors in it I take the side mount off.
thanks.

The rear sight is pretty dickered, looks like someone was hitting it where the pin is for the flip and not the dovetail part. One on the two set screws for the elevator is broken. I'll see if I can strengthen the pin but the thin part was blown out. I'll see if I can get a replacement.
