Question for Ruger No. 1 Shooters

Do these Ruger models have the same issues as the Ruger bolt action? Specifically, I am referring to the design of the throat where the rifling is started farther down the barrel than alot of other guns. I know 2 guys who unloaded their Ruger bolts because they had to seat the bullet really far out of the cartridge to get any accuracy. Can I expect this from a the No. 1 as well?

I can't say anything about the No1, but when I measured my M77 in 204 I found that the throat is actually pretty short, shorter than the throat on my Shilen AR barrel, also a 204. I would hesitate to say that ALL Rugers have long throats.

i've never done a chamber cast on any of mine but it shouldn't be much of an issue anyway because it is a single shot. i get descent accuracy with factory loads and rarely ever seat reloads much beyond the cannular. how accurate do you expect your rifle to be? i'm happy with 2" (though the 270 has done much better at times) at a hundred yards but i'm not that good a shot i suppose.

When I WAS in good shooting shape, i.e. shooting weekly, most of the time I got less than 1 inch groups with my .308 lever and .243 Win, and that was with sporter barrels. I have to admit that these groups were not factory loads, but reload recipes I cooked up.

I had never heard about excessive leade with the M77 (or the #1). The #1s do tend to string vertically. At least mine do. But I think the average #1 will do fine for hunting.

I have 3 #1s and I think this is maybe the most beautiful mass produced rifle ever made. Mine typically shoot around 1.25" groups, usually a bit vertical, and almost always 2 are nearly touching and the 3rd opens it up.

I have a Ruger # 1 in a 30-06. Mine shoots tight 5 shot groups at 100yards with two different factory loads.( from a bench under good conditions ) I consider myself very lucky as I bought mine used from a local hunting shop.
The previous owner had obviously had some trigger work done on it , and may well have had some work done to deal with the stringing issues if it ever had any ?

Gotta agree with Saxonpig The #1's are among the most beautiful rifles I've ever seen.

I have had three (No. 1's) and still have one. The 22-250 was a tack driver, the 7mm Rem Mag was good for 1.5" at 100 yards. The 30-06 was rechambered to 30-338 Win Mag and was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I have since rechambered it to .300 Win Mag because I don't like to reload. As a .300 Win Mag, it shoots under an inch at 100 yards (5 shot groups from a bench and bags)

In my #1's, especially the .25-'06 I must be careful to seat bullets in my reloads so that they do not contact the lands , especially the heavier bullets.
I free floated the forearms in both my rifles and with reloads, they are exceptional shooters, 3 shot dime size groups at 100 yards not uncommon.
