I have a chance to buy a new Winchester Model 70 in 300
WSM. The gun has the Syn. stock and SS, 26" barrel.
I have never owned a Win bolt action. Just levers.
What accuracy can I expect for this if I hand load, and really
wring it out?
I have several Ruger No.1's and several other man. bolt
actions that Ihave managed to get under 1 MOA at 100 yds.
Will the 300 WSM be as accurate, in the syn. Win?
What is a "Fair" price for this gun?

go for it.

I love my .300 WSM. Granted it took some getting used to, but I've been able to put two shots through the same ragged hole at 100 yrds.

I'd say handloading is were the honey is at, as shells are quite expensive.

Winchester makes a great bolt action, they are tough as nails and easy to maintain.

happy new years

i really like the 300 wsm. mine's a winchester, and i really don't care for the rifle, but the cartridge... wow, i really like it.

i load mine to 3025 f/s w/ 180 sierra gamekings. excellent on-game performance w/ that combo.

i would be awfully surprised if the rifle you are looking at, assuming good condition, couldn't stay sub moa to as far as you can shoot it.

as far as really wringing out the handloads, i have taken mine to over 3100 f/s w/ no pressure signs, but accuracy started falling off as i kept going hotter. figured that +3000 f/s w/ a 180 grain pill is plenty good for the girls i go w/. :D

have no idea what a fair price would be... check to see what similiar rifles are going for on gunbroker or auction arms to get a feel.

Yeah... I think if I had no guns and I were starting over from scratch, I'd likely start of with a .22lr, a .243 and a .300 WSM. In that order.

Sarge,

I bought a Winchester M70 Classic LT in .300 Win Mag a couple of months ago and wrote it up in THR, if you want to search for it. It is my first Winchester, and overall, I'm very impressed. The WSM model should be a little lighter weight, maybe half a pound.

I think the M70 is underrated lately. It's accurate and has good metal work, both where you can see it and where it's hidden by the stock. The trigger is adjustable for pull weight easily, and I expect to learn about stoning soon, to reduce creep. Mine will require a little bedding; I've never done that before, and I'm looking forward to trying it. John Barsness has an article on basic bedding in the Nov 03 "Rifle" magazine, and it appears pretty simple.

The first couple of groups I shot were right around one MOA with factory loads. They're a little worse since I took the action out of the stock, but that's likely a function of screw tightness, and bedding, as I said.

It's a nice rifle, and I'll probably buy another, the next one in M70 Featherweight.

Gentlemen: Thanks for the info. Haven't made up my mind yet, probably have a while to think about it. I really don't need the gun, but..............;)
