Federals have a reputation for being soft; they are the last choice of some, and the first choice of others, for this reason. I have nothing against them, I just prefer CCI for rifle and pistol, and Winchester for shotgun.
Federal is the only brand I use due to the fact that they are softer and some of my revolvers have such light actions they won't fire CCI. In my opinion Federal are also the most consistant primer especially the match primers. A guy on another forum just rang a really detailed test on primers as far as velocity and one interesting fact with small pistol and large pistol, Federal standard matched the velocity of CCI magnum primer in just about every case with Federal Magnum giving a little more velocity, but as I've said for years, the velocity difference is not very much. Thats why I use Magnum primers in all of my handgun loads, small and large.
It's the sensitivity that forces the primers to be shipped in packaging that spaces each primer further apart. So the larger format packing is for safety reasons, not to mess up your personal storage routines.
