I just joined the NRA and paid for a one year membership. The charge has hit my account. However, I got a letter from them today with a temporary membership card and a paper attached to it saying to get a permanent card return your dues today etc etc. I've already paid...so what does that mean?

The card I have says it expires at the end of August.

I was on hold for a very long time and figured I'd wait till everyone else wasn't getting off work and asking questions. Till then...just wondering if anyone had any idea.

And when I just checked back they're offices were closed. (My first call was right before the thread was posted).

If there is a clerical error with your membership, talking directly with NRA customer service is the only way you will resolve it.

BTW, while you are on the phone you might want to tell them to take your name off their junk mail list. I have them send me my magazine and renewal stuff only. Otherwise, be prepared to start the junk mail bombardment.

I opted not for the free magazine subscription on the off chance that I end up getting charged for it or get others I don't want. I've read of several NRA dirty tricks at getting your money and I was wondering if this particular situation might have been one of them.

Any other advice on dealing with the NRA is appreciated.

Just **** can it. You already paid.

This is one of their marketing/sales tactics and is a major beef of mine with them. I also dislike their sending you the free DVD and then demanding payment for it several weeks later with an official-looking collection notice. FACT: Anything sent to you in the mail is yours to keep and use.

It's been my experience over the years that the NRA conveniently loses sight of the fact that I'm paid up, hoping I'll spring for another year in advance.:uhoh:

Don't sweat it. The payment and membership offices are always out of synch. They'll catch up in a week or so and send your card.

I got two magazines (America's First Freedom and American Rifleman) along with my $35 a year membership.

They do send a lot of mailings asking for donations. I've donated once and got the coffee mug months later in the mail. It's ok, I'll put up with the junk mail in exchange for having a large group fighting the killjoys and their allies in Hollywood.

Expect a monthly temporary card and renewal form from the NRA. They bury you in junk mail.
I got their credit card several years ago. It came with a free membership that I never could get. I cannot remember who the card was actually through but I went back and forth between the credit card company and the NRA. They never did honor the free membership claim. I don't know if this was normal for them. They pissed me off enough that I let my membership lapse for a couple of years and sent my donations to smaller groups.

I have been an NRA member for over 40 years, my Dad since the 1930's, at one time, including my 3 brothers, we had 5 members living in one house, and never, at no time were we ever 'bombarded' with junk mail. They have never come close to burying me in junk mail.

I get more junk mail from AARP, which I am not a member of, and AAA of NJ, and I live in Vermont, than I ever have gotten from the NRA. Hell, I get more junk fliers from Domino's Pizza, and there isn't one of them with in 75 miles of me.

You join a gun rights organization and complain because they send you gun rights information? The NRA has 2 main weapons to use, direct lobbying and grassroots activism, both require money and numbers to make them effective. How far do you think your $35 actually go? If my memory serves me correctly; ILA, the political arm of the NRA gets 0% of your dues.

So you join the NRA to feel like you are doing something to help fight for your rights, and they will do the actual fighting for you for the additional expense of having to toss a few pieces of mail, or answering the phone, or getting a DVD in the mail (and having to decide whether to just keep it, pay for it, or send it back in the addressed, prepaid mailer that it came with).

And, you know, most of the 'junk mail' they send you, takes about 30 seconds to open and read. About 1/2 the time of a Miller Beer commercial on TV. Maybe it wouldn't really hurt to read a few of them and find out what they are trying to do on your behalf. It's kind of amazing that the NRA is able to get anything done considering how many members feel overburdened by simply taking a 1oz letter all the way from the mailbox to the trash can. Then again, thinking about how many shooters can't even be bothered taking down their targets when they are done with them, maybe I shouldn't be to surprised.

I feel left out. :(

Why won't the NRA send me junk mail or items that are almost mail-fraud issues? Why haven't they tried to trick me?

The NRA must not value me as a Life Member.

Yeti,

No one here is complaining about what the NRA does for our rights. They were just stating the fact that sending dvd's then demanding money for them is ethically wrong, and junk mail (to those who get it) can get annoying after a while and is money better well spent else where. Important letters/email are always welcome.

My question was why were they asking for my membership fee when I already paid it. NOT complaining that I had to pay it. If I had a decent job (warehouse stocker till my college degree actually pays off and gets me a career) I don't have the money for a life time membership or donations. I barely had enough money to buy the year long membership. My $35 dollars (which was actually supposed to be 20 some, but they lied about that) may be quite humble compared to what you or others give, but its all I can afford so I am proud of it.

They just got back to me. My membership fee wasn't processed until after the letter for the money came out. Problem solved.

1) I have not been bombarded with junk mail.

2) I have had all sorts of magazines try to get me to pay for another year, so it is up to you to keep track of that kind of info.

They are not to bad with junk mail, my dad is a member and I just joined.

Credit card company's are the worst, I must get 2-3 a day. I'm tempted to sign up for all of them, rack up $200k in debt and go bankrupt.:D
