When are these cheesy ray gun grip panel black stocks gonna cease to be produced?! I mean I really like the concept of the new Savage A17 but every time I look at it, it screams AXIS to me, and it is such a downer. I DO like the black synth. stock from ruger, and others so dont get me wrong. I just cant stomach the new cheesey molded square grip panel stocks or cheesey vent cuts in the forearm. I am hoping these are a fad. And the grip on the axis seems way back from the receiver.

Worst offenders:
Savage Axis, A17, Win.70 coyote light, Ruger american, Mossberg.

Tasteful synthetic: Ruger 77, Win 70 EW, H&S precision, Sako (carefully flirting with the line but they get a pass because they are Euro) Remington 700.
You can do a synthetic with nice old fashioned checkering and lines. They look great!

Quick rant over.

And it's because people like you who complain so much that companies such as Savage need to offer the lost cost rifles.

People like you complain when rifles are too expensive, so companies must cut corners to offer a product for low budgets.

If you don't like the rifles...don't buy them...it's pretty simple. Most of the time there are aftermarket stocks.

Don't like the Axis...buy a Boyd's. It's pretty simple and no need to rant.

Otherwise pony up and spend $600-1,500 on awesome stocks and chassis.

To most people who it actually matters to, beyond a forum rant, aren't buying factory rifles anyway.

If you want a rifle custom to your needs/ wants. You're going to pay custom prices.

People like you....

You know me?

My average firearm is well over $1000.00
This is a matter of style not cost. The ugly axis stock is cheaper than the nice looking stevens stock? Nope.

Hate to break it to you, but your opinion is not the be all / end all. There are nearly 7 billion people on this planet, and many of them probably do not share your opinion.

Don't like it, don't buy it.

Your opinion, like mine, is worth what you pay for it. Internet service fees not included.

When are these cheesy checkered wood stocks gonna cease to be produced?! I mean I really like the concept of the new Savage classic 14/114 but every time I look at it, it screams AXIS to me, and it is such a downer. I DO like the walnut stock from ruger, and others so dont get me wrong. I just cant stomach the new cheesey checkered grip panel stocks or cheesey vent cuts in the forearm. I am hoping these are a fad. And the grip on the axis seems way back from the receiver.

Fixed it for you, just to give another perspective.

As to synthetic vs. wood (not exactly the subject here, I realize).

I have bought 4 MAK-90 AK47s throughout my collecting and shooting years. ALL of them had cracked butt stocks. The thumb holes are cut for righties, and I'm a lefty. So as not to spend too many hours whittling, sanding, repairing the stocks, I swapped them out for synthetic ones that never break. Problem solved.
Friends have turned up their noses at my now-synthetic furniture, but the synthetic suits me. Who else should be impressed by them? ---shrug---

I too have a hatred for the cheap plastic stocks. Having owned a axis ( now wears a boyds) I don't understand why they can't make them better? I own a 150$ pardner pump Chinese made shotgun, the plastic stock is perfect on it. Rigid, good texture, and checkering. Why can't other companies make them like that? I've owned airsoft guns with better stocks then the savage axis, hell the forearm on my pressure washer handle would make a better stock then the axis..... Rant over.

honestly i dont care how cheap or ugly plastic stock become....as far as im concerned, the cheaper they make them the better......because the only reason i buy a rifle with a plastic stock is when i know im going to replace it with an aftermarket stock.

hell, i wish more companies would just start selling barreled actions, and ditch the stock all together.

That's a good idea--buy a barreled action! It used to be easy to buy a nice barreled action, but it's not so easy now. In the early 80's I bought a CZ 30-06 barreled action and put it in a Fajen walnut stock. I still think it's beautiful! I don't own any rifles with synthetic stocks, although I do have one that's laminated. I guess I use the if you don't like it, don't buy it method. It works.

Sorry Bud, I'm not following you, and I'm not sure you are following me. I dont care how cheap they are, and I totally understand the utility and cost benefit of these stocks.

What is distasteful to me is the how they look, the space ray gun molded grip panels. Ive already provided good examples of nice looking synthetics.

Like I said I wanna buy an A17 but Man that stock....how ugly can it get?!

I`m sure your opinion is shared by others. As a consumer you have choices.

So it`s safe to say your won`t buy one..... correct.

Is this comment supposed to be helpful? It's certainly not clever and isn't even relevant given that gun owners only account for a tiny percentage of people on this planet?

dvdcrr, you should be free to voice your opinion without the personal attacks. I think of synthetic stocks as being made from fiberglass, carbon fiber etc. and consider the stocks you refer to as plastic stocks. Like you I'm not a fan of them. I bought a Savage Weather Warrior with the much hyped AccuStock about five years ago and it's an unmitigated piece of junk. The rifle cost $650 or so but sadly the stock was the least of its problems.

If you talk with the folks at Oneida or similar you'll learn why these stocks are mostly junk. Companies start out with these grand ideas that they want a quality plastic stock, but as the design process grinds on, and the cost of the desirable features mount, the vast majority of companies end up settling for a lesser (and considerably cheaper) product.

I think all rifles should come with hand checkered walnut stocks or high end composite stocks. That said, I dont want to pay $500 for an entry level .22..... So, drop it in a "place holder" plastic gumby stock and I'm out shooting my $160 .22 rifle.

Did any of you even read the op? He says that there are cheaper synthetic stocks that look better, it is the aesthetics of the thing he is talking about. Smh...

Ginger or Mary Ann?

I happen to think the Ruger American has one of the best designes in the cheap plastic stocks. The Ruger Hawkeye and Tikka are up there too. The Remington and Savage are the worst.

All of my go-to rifles have Kevlar McMillan stocks on them. But the truth is that even the cheapest of the synthetics shoot better than 99% of shooters are capable of.

Its a cheap rifle, I expect a cheap, almost worthless stock on it. I'm a function over form guy though.. Cant stand the look of any poly stocks, but I have to admit that if I was building for pure accuracy, it'd probably be a synthetic stock...

No, of course it's not supposed to be helpful. He didn't ask for help. He came here to rant about his opinion about something he find aesthetically unpleasing. And since when does being a gun owner or not limit the merits of an opinion on the guns themselves?

He opened up the can of worms by griping online in a forum about something that's been beaten to death.

So he doesn't like how the stock looks. Cry me a river, build a bridge and get over it. Not once did I sink to a personal attack. Unless somehow disagreeing with his perspective and opinion... You know what, forget it. Not worth my time.

Love the things or hate them, I really couldn't care less.

Add the budget rifles from Remington to that list. I like most synthetic stocks I have seen on Rem 700 SPS or similar variants. But the junk that came with my 770 looked like it was made in a garage with a pocket knife by an 11 year old.
