Radioactive Russian Ammunition

And all this time I thought the green glowing dot going downrange was because the bullet had a tracer element...

84B20,

Since you have a Geiger counter, if you have any or know anyone with Russian import ammo, could you give it a whirl?

Justin: That was a pretty good dose for people flying from JFK to LAX.

How about for airline (767) crews flying about 85 hours per month from ATL to Moscow or DTW to Narita and KIX etc? Many of the flights are across the northern Atlantic or Pacific.

That 85 hours a month at the radiation levels reported for the flight from JFK to LAX would still be under 1 mSV a month, 12/year, which comes out to less than 1/4th of the yearly limit for US Radiation workers. Of course these are all just approximations and based on the chart. Cosmic Background Radiation is a very good reason for women not to fly during pregnancy, when the fetus is super vulnerable to radiation.

Just because your ammo was produced in the fallout zone doesn't mean it will be radioactive. They don't make the stuff outside and fallout won't go through the roof of a factory. Even if some managed to get in it wouldn't be measurable.

This. Fallout is contamination, the particles would have to actually fall on the ammo.... The tin the ammo came in would more likely be affected, but even then it wasn't likely to have been stored outside uncovered.... I doubt it's an issue.
