(This is probably bad timing to write this considering the war is most likely affecting the answer, but nevertheless... )

The Russian ammo ban was enacted in September 2021. I remember reading that there was some speculation that the Russian ammo companies (Barnaul, Tula) might build factories outside of Russia to get around the ban, and thus keep up their production. Does anyone know if there is some truth to that?

Watching Gunbroker, it looks like what was in transit dried up. It seems auctions are just reselling existing supplies.

Wolf has a presence in Ukraine, there was lots of Ukrainian Wolf x39 being sold in the US pre-Russian invasion, but I doubt we will see anything out of that plant for quite some time.

Interesting, I found Belom almost impossible to deprime. Been tossing them all.

The first proposed “ban” Actually began in late 2019–

before Russia’s 2021 war on Ukraine.

Our State Dept had tentatively planned to cancel extensions on permits to import ammo from Russia.

Some lingered for a while. Academy had Tula x54 that disappeared in 2022. The. The x39 hung on a while but that disappeared about a month or two back. I’m guessing there was a lot in the pipeline and it’s finally running out.

I’ve seen a lot of Romanian and Hungarian stuff on the market. Norma is making 9mm Makarov and x39 there. I saw a stack of Romanian spam cans at Bass Pro last week in x39, so it’s out there.

There wasn’t much out of Ukraine because their small arms ammo factory was in Donetsk. They never got around to replacing it after 2014. This was largely considered a mistake. They mostly need 5.45x39 for rifles and 7.62x54 for machine guns, though photos are showing the Ukrainians using more FN MAGs in 7.62 NATO.

I still have a case of 9mm Mak. Don't shoot it as much as pre-ban. I have new brass that I bought years ago as a hedge against shortage. Same is true for the X39.

Hhmmmm, you really have no problem with sizing and depriming? I started seeing them during COVID and had significant problems. Time to revisit????
No problem there the exact same brass as the ppu just with the belom stamp, I pulled several down and compared it. Only difference was head stamp and some have different color primer sealer some don't have any sealer like the hunting ammo ppu. Did you wet tumble your brass?

Nope I dry media tumble everything, I have an RCBS sonic cleaner that I rarely use. Too much trouble drying everything out, probably should sell it. I am afraid of putting an entire pistol into the (distilled) water for fear of rust. My range cleans in a big tub by putting the entire unit into the water.

yeah my problem is I have an AK-74 style rifle and I just don't even bother shooting it for now since the 5.45 ammo is a bit rare. I'm sitting on a decent amount but as others have said there is a big draw for that stuff in the East. :(
