I went to the range on super bowl Sunday. Weather was great! Place has been packed lately, but half the benches were open. Gotta remember that for next year...
SU16's have a reputation for jamming with steel cased ammo. First time I shot mine, two other guys had the A models, & both locked up tight with empty wolf cases stuck inside. I haven't had that bad a problem, but the bolt feels dry and tight after 100 rounds or so. I think I went wrong and kept the piston too dry. I don't think you are supposed to oil the end the gas hits, but have to oil the rest.
Also, the bore is chrome plated on the CA model, and on all of the newer production models. That probably helps.
So Sunday I shot about 150 rounds of the Hornady training ammo. This is steel cases, laquer coated. Hornady buys cases from a Russian company, and loads them in the USA with their powder and bullets. Much cheaper than brass ammo, and I dont feel bad about throwing out the empties.
They worked great for me. I was hitting steel 8 or 10 inch plates at 200 yards no problem. This was with a red dot sight with no magnification.
I had no problems with the ammo, and seemed very accurate for me.
I also put on a 'Linear accelerator comp' by DPMS I got from Midway. I thought the plain short 16" barrel had a huge flash and was very loud. This comp is just a cylinder with holes in the end only. It doesn't stop the barrel rising, but it seemed to help push the noise and flash forward. That is nicer for the folks on either side! It did what I wanted.
The comp is about 1/4 inch longer than an A2 type flash hider. It looks like it could be cut back a bit if you wanted to shorten it. Maybe 3/8"?
I used a crush washer, and that holds it well, and it all looks good I think.
I met nice folks on either side. We traded guns, talked shop, had a great time. 90% of the folks I meet at ranges are very pleasant.
