This is the Saiga-12 conversion I just received from Elite Firearms.
Just got back from the range and I think I've finally found my shotgun! Fired nearly 100rds of WallyWorld low base loads plus 15rds of slug & 20rds of 00. The Saiga has a gas port with settings for low & magnum loads. It's recommended that the shotgun be thoroughly cleaned before firing (which I deliberately ignored for this test).
Many owners report that the shotgun shoots all loads reliably on the '1' (magnum) setting after a good cleaning and a couple of hundred rds of break-in so I wasn't surprised when mine wouldn't shoot the low base loads reliably on the magnum setting. I did have a few jams with the low base loads initially at the low base '2' setting but this cleared up and was 100% reliable at the '2' setting by the end of the range trip. Functioning w/slugs & 00 at the '1' setting was strictly %100, period.
Fast? I loaded up the 5rd mag and keeping an eye on the first empty was able to fire all 5 shots before the first empty hit the ground!
Sighted in the PK-AS at 50yds w/slugs and after that the PK-AS was just plain lethal on anything I aimed at! The circle in the reticle makes for *very* fast hits! At appx 10yds the circle in the PK-AS reticle exactly covers a B27 torso & Federal Premium 00 patterns right in the center, maybe covering 40% of the torso. Very fast setup using my *left* eye the entire time. Found an interesting use for the PK-AS elevation adjustment wheel: When sighted in for slugs to hit dead-on at 50yds, 00 hits several inches low from POA when fired from 10yds. The solution? If I leave the elevation wheel set to '0' then I'm dead on w/slugs at 50yds and if I set it to '10' (takes all of 2 seconds to make the adjustment) then I'm dead-on w/00.
Recoil: Took my M65 field jacked off (it was about 40F at the range) and fired first 15rds of 00 then 10rds of slug w/no recoil pad on the Romy folder & only a t-shirt between my shoulder & the folder. While I felt the recoil on my cheek it didn't hurt, irritate or bruise my cheek. 00 was tolerable on the shoulder & slugs were very stout, would probably prove painful if I fired many more of these than I did (shoulder does have just a touch of tenderness & shows a little surface hemorrahging). With the M65 you knew you were firing 00/slugs but there was no discomfort at all, I think using the Bulgarian strap-on AK recoil pad would produce the same effect.
My *only* complaint about the Saiga-12 (aside from the cost of 8rd mags) is that inserting loaded mags on a closed bolt can be an exercise in frustration (nothing like the quick & easy "rock & lock" of the std AK) but I've heard it gets better w/practice and as the mags wear in. I'll give it a thorough cleaning and test how it performs w/the low base cheap stuff again.

Thanks, good stuff about the Saigas keep on coming in. How about a few rounds of skeet?...

Interesting.... more to tell us?

What would you like to know? I ordered my 2nd Saiga conversion from them today and since the Duracoat on the first appears to be defective they're paying shipping both ways to refinish it for me free of charge.

Hey, Tomac, right now that looks like a pretty damn cool project, I'd be interested in picking one up myself if the price is right.

Could you do me a favor if you feel like it, and share with us how much the whole thing cost you overall?

Thanks.

No problem. I supplied the Romy folder, pistol grip & fcg and my total cost shipped was $450 (they supply the new donor Saiga-12). They cut the bbl to 18.5", open the gas port a tad to compensate for the shorter bbl & refinish in Duracoat. I just ordered a 2nd where I'm supplying the Romy folder & pistol grip (but no fcg) and my total cost shipped is $480. If you don't want to supply anything then a converted Saiga-12 w/pistol grip & black polymer buttstock is $519 shipped. HTH!...

Is there an easy way to load singles in a Saiga without putting it in the magazine? Able to just drop it in the chamber with the bolt back and close it?

You can drop one in the chamber w/the bolt back but it's not as easy as doing the same thing with, say, a pump. However, if you have a loaded magazine already inserted then the action will attempt to double feed so loading from the open chamber will only work w/no loaded magazine inserted (I think it might work w/an *empty* mag inserted, haven't tried that yet...) Seeing how hard it is to insert a loaded mag on a closed bolt I've ordered the SWIFT notched AK safety http://www.blackjackbuffers.com/bjbcatalog3.html with the thought that when the mag runs dry just pull back the charging handle and use the thumb to activate the notch hold-open. Then swap mags (easy to do on an open bolt) and close the bolt by dropping the safety.

So, 519 for basically what you have in that picture? Sweet man, thats quite possibly one of the angryest looking shotguns that I could legally own.

Wow. d*mnit, thats another thing on my wish list....

Thanks for the info on that man.

The only reason I ask is because if I happened to get one I'd of course want to use it for trap and the local field is only one round in at a time. Oh yeah does the bolt lock back on empty?

Almost, the $519 would have a fixed stock and not include the PK-AS sight. However, you can supply your own pistol grip (like I did the Tapco FAL-style AK pistol grip) or the buttstock of your choice (like I did the Romy folder) and the price will be reduced accordingly. I hadn't thought of it in those terms before but I think you're right, that's possibly the angriest-looking shotgun you can legally own!

Unfortunately there's no automatic bolt hold-open when the mag runs try (true AK design) but the newer versions have a manual bolt hold-open button to the right and slightly behind the trigger. For now it would probably be easier just to use mags loaded w/1rd each. There is someone who's working on an auto-bolt hold-open that won't require modding the mags but he won't say much until he knows for sure it will work.

Man, I'm buying a Mossberg Maverick next week, I'll buy one of these around christmas I'm thinking.

Ohhhhh, that'd be a dream to own.

So the most rounds the mags can hold is 8? if thats true, that'd be the only blemish I could possibly find off of that beauty.
I couldn't get them done custom?

A drum would be sick beyond belief.

Sooooo angry looking, I love it!

EDIT: One other question man, I remember talking to some wonderful gun nut about semi auto shotguns, and he mentioned about having to use metal or paper shells, as the plastic ones tended to melt inside the gun after the barrel heated up too much. Do you have that problem with this work of art?

I've heard the 8rd mag can hold 9 rds but then can't be inserted on a closed bolt. Since it's now legal to mfg your own mags I suppose you could cobble together anything you'd like.
A drum? I've heard rumors of one by next SHOT Show but if they did I'd expect the alphabet crew to slap a "destructive device" dsignation on the Saiga ASAP (ala the USAS-12, one of the reasons I've ordered a 2nd converted Saiga-12...).

Rds melting??? Haven't experienced it or heard of it. Saw a video clip of a full-auto Saiga-12 for LE/Military use and they didn't seem to have any problems. Guess I'll have to wait for my 8rd mags to arrive, load 'em up and fire 'em off as fast as I can and see what happens. I have heard of the top rd in a mag deforming if left inserted in the shotgun for too long (just rotate out every month or so).
