On Friday night, in my neighborhood at my old job, a guy that i used to work with got robbed at about 9:30 P.M. He was taking the trash out to the dumpster in the side parking lot of the building. From what i've heard, two males robbed him at gunpoint (not sure if they both had guns or if it was just one of them). They took his wallet, his cell phone, and his iPod, and then from my understanding after they had the goods they pistol whipped him. (He might have just got punched or something I heard the story through the grapevine and stories tend to get embellished)

I started to get to thinking, I'll be 21 this summer and will be getting my carry permit. I tried to play this situation over in my head and how I would react to it. My question is, what would you do? 1 or 2 people get the drop on you and try to mug you and you're carrying. I would think to immediately give them all my valueables, so that they don't try to search me and find my gun, because things could go south from there.

I'm not necessarily asking would you shoot or not, but more so asking what precautions would you take so that they didn't discover you're gun? and how would you handle the sitaution overall.

You've come to the right place

take the initiative and throw your "steal this bankroll" 0n the ground...you know, that large looking bankroll that is about 20 bucks in singles...or better yet, a lot of paper same size as bills.
Then while your talking you whip it out and let them eat lead in mid sentence.
When yer talking they don't expect it.
If you see two guys in an alley though, take out the garbage later.

Trash talking

It's always wise to be a little extra cautious when taking out the trash at a business. Crooks would rather sneak through the back door than the front. When I worked at a restaurant and it was trash time, our security guard always preceded us kitchen crew flunkies out the back door. As I was promoted into management, he told me of a few robberies and assaults that happened at our store and at others, including the one in which he was shot.

Now at my current employ, if I have to take out the trash, I'll be by myself. What I make a habit of doing is opening the door without anything in my hands. This gives me the chance to look the area over, and I'll shut the door if anyone's outside. Heck, trash can sit in the warehouse overnight. It only takes a second to check things out.

Well, they took his iPod. Keep your ears open in these types of situations. That'll go a long way toward keeping people from getting the drop on you.

he couldn't have been listening to his iPod because it's not allowed. i'm guessing he just had it in his pocket. but i hear ya, to stay alert with both your eyes and ears.

I went through a scenario in a force-on-force training class similar to this. Going into an unknown area to perform a task and leave. In our scenario, it was one of those walk-up ATM's in a building at night. Two guys were waiting out of view in the "foyer" of the building to attack. Of twenty people to run through that scenario, only two got it right. They opened the door, looked in, didn't like what they saw, and left. One instance, the 'perps' chased after.

In this instance, I would take off the headphones, check the area before heading to the dumpster, and avoid it if those two were present. If the 'victim' saw the perps approach, he may have had an opportunity to escape by turning tail and running like his hair was on fire. Those trash bags are also weapons to be used. Who here wants to be soaked in smelly garbage while trying to rob someone? Kinda makes you stand out. The garbage bags could be thrown as a distraction and give enough time to get out of dodge or get to fighting.

I wasn't there, I don't know the layout, or what happened. This is my two cents worth.

.

what if the guys don't happily go away as many have suggested?

what if you saw them and decided to wait until later, but they were still there, and the necessary task was more important than taking the trash out?

Then it wouldn't be the "what would you do" scenario outlined in the OP. A general answer for your general question though: Find another way to accomplish the task, call the cops, get a buddy to come out, etc.

Things are already going south when you get taken by surprize; when someone(s) get the drop on you.

If you are going to or at a dumpster and someone is heading your way - with no trash - you should be in condition orange. When out and about, day or night around buildings, trees, shrubbery, fences, parked cars and dumpsters, etc look for signs - using all five of your senses.

For me, personally, if I am armed and someone approaches me, appears from behind some object or cover, I am sizing them up and watching or watching for their hands. As soon as I see a gun, knife or other deadly weapon there is a 90% chance I will draw, shoot and move right off. It all depends on many things, but at some time I will shoot - because I already consider my life in peril, and attempting to appease and place myself at the mercy of any thug is a risky choice. Far more risky in my opinion than defending myself at first opportunity.
