^ The rod is dropped down the barrel to the breechface, marked at the muzzle, then measured against a standard yardstick. I'm sure you're joking about "ATF inches".
The point about recrowning is why I have shortened a couple of rifle barrels to 17" as survival rifles or snake guns. If I had to recrown the muzzle on my factory AR7, it would have to be counter bored, not squared off and recrowned, because there is just no wiggle room.
