i want a new full size 9mm (just for the heck of it really, for fun and for the economy of 9mm). i am hopelessly torn between a witness elite, taurus pt92, and a hi-power (pbly charles daly to keep it in my very limited price range). i also want a kahr (not full size, not sa), but that really doesnt fall in w/ the others very well...lol. they all feel sooo good in my hands that i am having a terrible time choosing.

the witness elite would be great looking and awsome for punching holes in paper, adjustable sights and all. the trigger is really, really nice as well (could be just a little lighter tho). it just feels good.

the taurus i want just because my dad didnt let me keep the beretta when i moved out, and i dont really want to step up into that price range to get one (would rather buy another 1911 if i got up there). i like the idea of practicing w/ the sidearm that i would get issued if i got sent overseas as well. they seem really well built, even on the old beretta machinery ive heard. plus it has a rail...in case i wanted to...well i guess i dont really need the rail. BUT IT IS THERE. lol.

then the hi-power. also left w/ the old man. god do i miss this thing. the charles daly feels and points the same as the fn, just doesnt look so pretty. plus it has the xs sight system i would have to adjust to. but then agian, my 1911's feel lonley w/o their little brother...lol.

i really really want all 3. but how to choose? how do you guys choose when you can't really decide which is better for you? ahhh...i need some conseling or soemthing...lol. maybe i should just forget the whole thing and compromise by buying a 1911 in 9mm. i know i cant afford all 3, and there are some other pistols that i want/need (mainly want) that will have to come before the other 2 that i dont choose.

I'll be the first to recommend a CZ:
CZ SP-01 - 9mm, rail, full-size, barely any felt recoil, better grip than the regular 75B (and thus the Witness as well?).

You could be issued one if you shipped out overseas... with the Czech national cops.

Beretta 92SB @ www.cdnnsportsinc.com for $299 or Taurus PT92AF Military for $369 they also have a few CZ85 $279 or Israelie made by Tangefolio $299

I've been finding used HighPowers locally for $485 till I bought me FN- Highpower SFS for $350 before that I was about to buy a CharlesDaly new or used. Nothing against ARMASOR or KBI but I'd rather have a used HP than a new CD for rthe same price.
Good luck

I also would go with a CZ-75B if you want to keep it under $500. None of the 3 pistols in the original post are ones I would normally recommend.

Well two of the three are very good choices, not sure why anyone would want a Beretta 92, but to each their own.

I'm pretty much convinced the Witness Match is the biggest bargain on the planet (currently $429 at Schramms). If you think that trigger could be lighter then you will absolutely hate the other two you mentioned. My .40 S&W Match has settled in at 2.5 pounds as set by the factory, except for bullseye shooting you do not want it any lighter. It is a big gun though, too big for me to carry concealed in fact. I tried it for a day and it makes my BHP's feel like nothing. It's my IDPA gun now that the holster has arrived.

I currently also have 5 BHP's, 2 in 9mm and 3 in .40. Great pistols but the triggers take some getting used too, or some gunsmith work. I've taken the Mag Disconnect out of mine and that improves the smoothness a lot, and reduces the weight a bit. Mine still run 5-6 pounds but are much cleaner now.

CZ's are ok, nothing really special for the price though, the DA pull is normally fairly rough with them, but of course you can have them cleaned up nicely by a gunsmith. A standard model Witness will be as accurate, with a similar trigger, and $100-175 cheaper. The finish on the standard models is not as good as the CZ but my old PS model has been running since about '93 with no problems at all.

If you're in the military and think you're going overseas I would get the Beretta 92 hands down.

Get all the trigger time you can on what you're going to carry!

The others are great options and I would suggest the Cougar that Stoeger just brought back out for Beretta. However, the 92 would still be the first choice.

CZ 75/85/SP-01
Beretta PX4
FEG Hi Power (should be better than a CD)
Baby Eagle (not polymer)

Don't settle for a second tier gun, look around for a great deal on a use Beretta 92, Browning Hi-Power or get yourself a CZ 75B.

Quality guns hold there value much better than something like the Taurus, Witness or Charles Daly, IMHO.

Stoeger Cougar :)

Just because I'm currently thinking about nabbing one of these (new) for less than I've paid for most of my (mostly used) pistols, and they're by most reports excellent guns all 'round -- accurate, well-made, Beretta-in-all-but-name, I toss out the idea of a Stoeger Cougar. The one I handled the other day certainly felt nice :)

$350 retail, and I see from posts on this forum that some people have paid $50 less ... wish I saw that deal myself.

O.K. Which pistol fits and functions better for you? Can recommend the Taurus 92 or the CZ75BD. Either is a excellent choice. Since the pistol has to fit you, be easy to understand, and shoot the choice is yours. Which pistol is easier to take apart for you. Maintenance concerns are also an issue. Read the online manuals as well as handle and shoot as many of the choices as possible. Club members, knowledgeable range personnel, as well as clerks who know their pistols can be a valuable source of info. Reading up in Digest Books or other soft cover books by Mas Ayoob, Cooper, Chuck Taylor, and others would give you a good body of knowledge to make a decision. Am a Ruger and Taurus owner and like their products. Being on the short stature side made my choices somewhat short because of small hands will not fit most double stack magazine pistols, though own three of them. Keep us posted as you decide. Have you been to www.unitedforums.com and clicked on the Taurus Forum at that site? If not search the archives and read the post on the PT92s. Remember, even if there is a problem being queried about the pistol in question doesn't mean the pistol is junk. New owners have to get used to the pistol's various quirks and function. Time and experience with a particular make and model take patience, time, and some study. Mechanical devices such as pistols do malfunction or need special attention from time to time.

Happy New Year.

Let me be the first to speak up for the Kahr. I love to shoot my E9 and MK9. I have had good luck with them (and had a good experience with Kahr when I needed service).

I also have Beretta 92D and have had good luck with it. The Beretta is a bit large for my hands, but is of superior quality and has always been reliable.

Just fired my new Witness Elite Match the other day and it is VERY nice. It's got a real nice trigger and is very accurate. It fed, fired, and ejected flawlessly, although it was only about 150 rounds worth. It fits my hand well, points well and the full size and wieght dampens recoil nicely which is what I wanted. Like you, I wanted a full size gun, just in .40 instead of 9MM.

My vote is for a HP. :D Classy pistol, reliable and very accurate. I'm not a 9mm guy, but the HP is a joy to shoot. So much so, I'm currently entertaining the idea of purchasing another 9mm, CZ RAMI. From what I have read, CZ is a great bang for the buck. You might check out a CZ75.

CZ

I don't own a CZ 75, yet, but I really like them. In fact, my little brother will be buying one this weekend. YEAH!!!

cdnnsports has Highpower MK3's for $399. Don't see how you can go wrong with one of those.

... my dad didnt let me keep the beretta when i moved out, and i dont really want to step up into that price range to get one ...

It looks like you have already answered your own question. Only because of what you have said I would think you should get the Beretta first. If you can't afford new, get a good used one. Nothing wrong with shooting many rounds through the handgun that may save your life some day in combat if you are deployed.

I'd go with the CZ75 or 85 series.

If you are into punching paper the CZ85 Combat comes with the adjustable rear sight.

Save up and get a Browning or FN HiPower, Glock 17, or similar quality handgun.

As my gun dealer says: "Someone who shoots as often as you will not be satisfied with the durability of a Taurus." I would extend that to the Witness and Charles Daly.

If you don't shoot often, they'll be fine. But don't go putting 20k rounds a year through them because you'll be disappointed.
