Generally I carry a Glock 27 in a galco pro pocket holster. This matches up nicely with the G23 I carry @ work and the G22 I keep in my "Nightstand".

This is on the heavy side of the scale for pocket carry and I am thinking of adding a lighter option. I want to also keep cost down.

It seems like there are a swarm of derrigner sized .380s and tiny 9mms on the market now so I would like some suggestions based on folks experience.

I am thinking with the 9mms only a little bit bigger than the .380 and costing about the same, I might as well take the extra stopping power of the 9mm.

So far, I am leaning towards the Kel-tec pf9.

The DB9 also looks good but cost considerably more. ( The magazine disconnect keeps the LC9 out for me, if it can not shoot without the mag, I do not want it )

I am a bit leary of the lack of reliability in the micro compacts in general, I am very tempted to just say stuff it and stick with the G27 and go get a used single six I that caught my attention at a local pawn shop.

I have both a P3AT and PF9 and carry both in pocket depending upon conditions. I have a couple of hundred rounds through the .380 and around 100 through the 9mm. They point well and go BANG.

My LCP has almost 1000 rounds through it without a problem. Round nose, hollow point, and flat nosed it doesn't seem to care. I usually carry it with Federal Hydro Shok for SD. I also reload for range shooting. This little gun takes a bit of practice to get reasonably accurate with it but I can reliably hit an 8x10" steel plate at 25yds with it which is about all I'd expect with such a small gun. The pistol just disappears in my front jeans pocket in a DiSantis Nemesis pocket holster. I carry it in my cargo shorts too. I also carry a Ruger LC9 which is just a week bit larger than I like for pocket carry, it works best in my soft tuck IWB holster. When wearing heavier clothes I like my Ruger SR40c in a Fobus paddle holster. As for the magazine disconnect in these Ruger guns, it's easy to remove if you don't want it. I particularly like the LCP and LC9 DAO hammer fired action. You don't need a safety with the long trigger pull and it's safe to carry with one in the spout. Price is good too.

Check out the P238 from sig, its more expensive than the other .380 options but it is the best of the bunch. Its a improved copy of the old Colt Mustang, and mine came with factory tritium night sights. It fits easily the front pocket of all my pants and it weights around 15 oz. Unlike most every other .380 pocket gun, the sights are actually usable too. Because it is a locked action and not a blowback the slide is easy to retract, I can rack mine by catching the rear sight on the edge of the pocket on my jeans.

Do yourself a favor and check it out, I started with a P11 and then moved on to a P3AT and this was my third and final pocket carry gun. Its also the only one that is easily shot with great accuracy.

Nutnfancy did a great video review of it too, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PgrjCy58d0.

The 938 looks like it will be great too but is has yet to be released and therefore it is untested.

I'm very pleased with the P3AT. It's very comfortable in the pocket-easy to carry an extra mag. It's very accurate for what it does and has been very reliable with everything but the cheap Tula ammo.

pf9, because it's light, cheap, hits hard and who wants a 1k$ gun sitting in an evidence locker?

I have an LCP for those extra special occasions. I went from an LCP, to a P238, to a .38 Special, to a .22 mini-revolver, and finally back to an LCP for pocket situations. I just finally settled on that gun because of its flatness and reliability. It is lighter, flatter, and I shoot it just as good as a j-frame. Also got some .380 dies so I can shoot it as much as a like.

I did check out the sig238, I love the feel of the gun, especially the trigger. I dont like the idea of trying to hit that little safety while fishing it out of a pocket. that and the price are turn offs. I do know a dealer that would let me put one on layaway if go that route. For that matter, supposedly colt is bringing back and improved version of the mustang. There are reviews of it online already, what I don't see is anyone actually selling them.

I love my Keltec P3AT for pocket carry, I forget it is there. I have a PF9, but only carry it on the belt or in a belly band. For pocket 9's I would go PM9/CM9 or Rohrbaugh.

My pocket gun is the Kel-Tec P32, which almost never rides alone anyway, since my PF9 is always on my belt. The only time it does ride alone is on my way to and from work (job is gun-free.) While the caliber may be smaller than you prefer, the gun is roughly the same size as the P3-AT and the other members of the "pocket-380" multitude.
The Diamondback DB9 is a tick smaller than the PF9 but, as snappy as these little nines can be, the Kel-Tec is pushing it as far as going smaller/lighter goes. Still, I find that, each time I shoot it, it seems easier to handle and perform well with.

I strongly recommend a lightweight J frame for a pocket gun. It is a little larger than most 380 pocket pistols, but the draw from a pocket is, in my experience, quicker and much more positive. Look at 642, 442, M&P 340, or 638.

Why on earth would it be in an evidence locker?
Am I missing something here?
After a Police action shooting, the weapon is confiscated until adjudication of the case. In my son's case it was over a year before his duty weapon was returned, and they also took his BUG from his ankle that wasn't even used.

Yes, that is SOP after a shooting.

The last thing on ones mind after a shooting would be concern over the firearm involved.

There is the cops, possible incarceration, district attorney, possible criminal prosecution, civil law suites, and legal expenses. Of course, shooting another human probably would take a huge emotional toll, even if justified.

The vast majority of the posters here are civilians. Even though many of us posses a permit to carry, and or have firearms at the ready in our homes, the odds of us shooting our fellow man are very, very rare.

If I had the funds, spending $1,000. or more for a carry gun would not be an issue.

If fear of the authorities seizing my prize firearm was a factor, then I would limit my choices of carry to Jimenez, High Point, Rossi, Taurus, maybe even an old Iver Johnson.

IMHO, the concept of not packing an expensive gun out of fear of shooting someone is totally unfounded.

One must remember that most LEO'S in their entire career never shoot at anything other then a target. A LEO has much greater odds of being involved in a shooting then the average citizen.

IMO, another rumor started by a glossy rag gun writer.

I don't usually recommend this due to the weight, but heck if you're lugging a G27 around in your pocket, how about a Bersa/Walther in 9mm? I know you don't prefer the magazine disconnect of the Ruger, but take a serious look at the new LC9. ;)

I like (depending on the pocket) the Seecamp .32, a scandium/titanium .38 J-frame, and a Walther PPS 9. Of those, my favorite is the .38.

I have owned other pocket guns in calibers from .22 Mag to .45 Colt; but I wouldn't ever grab one of those if I had the three above available.

I just dumped my G27 and got a LCP this very day. The Glock IWB daily for 5 years straight has destroyed my back.
