It's looking like it's that time again. My gun fund is starting to show signs of life and I need to plan my next purchase. I'm thinking this time I'd like to get a just a plain ole "fun gun". You know, nothing too fancy, not worried about accuracy, just something to go the range with and spray some lead.

Biggest factor, cheap ammo! I want something automatic because the only auto rifle I have is a Ruger 10/22 which was the first gun I ever bought. I don't shoot it much anymore for sentimental reasons.

Here are my thoughts so far. An AK, probably a WASR or something cheap like that. A bargain bin CMMG AR. Possibly a Galil, just something different. Maybe even an SKS, but that's a little heavier than I was envisioning.

But anyway, I think you can see where my train of thought is going with this. Something that's capable of minute of body accuracy with reasonably cheap and available ammo. So thoughts on my ideas so far and suggestions for further consideration will be helpful. I'd really like to stay under $600 on this deal.

Second for the Mini 14. Specificaly the new tactical with flash supressor. You can get them through CDNN for around $600. For that price it easily bests any of the arms on your list. The Bargain bin AR MIGHT be ok, but it could be a jamomatic and will most definately require fairly extreme maintanace.

I can attest the fun factor is there for the new mini 14s!

SKS Yugo M59. Most folks don't know how much better than the dime-a-dozen Yugos they are (and yet priced the same...)
Other than that, save the dough and get a HiPoint .40 carbine and a ton of ammo and go nuts!

(PS: and NOTHING called 'mini'...)

My new fun gun

I recently bought a S&W M&P 15-22. At under $450 it was a good deal and came with 2 - 25 round clips. I purchased another 3 clips for $60, a cheap WallyWorld Red/Green dot sight for $40 and an under the barrel laser for $30. The 22 LR ammo is cheap (you do have to be somewhat picky on the brands that will feed correctly) and my family has had nothing but fun shooting it. While I have read about malfunctions, I shot close to 500 rounds through it on my first outing (after a light cleaning/oiling) with no problems.

for a rifle,
would be my pick. Plus, then if you have some cash to burn there's no end to all the doo-dads you can hang off of it. AR's are great rifles.

overall, I get the biggest grins from my 12 gauge. Whether its slugs at the rifle range or buckshot at a patterning board its just fun to shoot. If you're lacking a good 12 gauge I would spend money on a remington 870 (wingmaster or police if you have the money)

Kel-Tec PLR-16. Very fun (and loud) to blast with. It's not a tack driver w/o a stock but you can hit man-size targets at 100yds from the sling.
If you want a rifle I'd get a bargain-bin AR. Gotta have one of those!

Hi-Point 995 carbine. The gun is only $200-$250 and 9mm ammo is pretty cheap to shoot.

Keltec sub2000. $300 gun that also shoots 9mm with one heck of an advantage. It takes glock mags.

Beretta 9mm carbine. Kick in the butt and pretty cheap to shoot, especially if you reload.

Cheap ammo, fun to shoot? The rifle most of my friends love shooting is the Henry lever action. For $10 you can shoot for an entire day, it's pretty accurate (better than minute of body), and a hoot to shoot - work that lever!

After the thrill of blasting with an AR or AK is gone, truth is, a lever-gun probably is the most fun, and it's way cheaper to shoot when ammo-count comes into the equation. A Camp 9 is fun to shoot. Cleaning it knocks off the desire to shoot it for "fun" again pretty quick though.

Why didn't I think of that lever gun. I have a Henry .22. I love it. Well, I actually got it for my son, to go along with this single six, but it's so much fun, that I'm thinking of getting a .357 lever gun to go along with my Ruger Blackhawk. There's a lot to be said about going shooting and not needing anything but the firearm and ammunition.

Another one you might look at is the Beretta CX4 in 9mm. They are incredibly accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. 9mm can be found pretty cheap now especially if you buy in bulk. However if your budget is $600 or less then the CX4 may not work for you since it's more in the $850 range. All the same it might be worth it to spend a little more and get one, you will not be disappointed.

I'd say the AK is probably your best choice if you don't yet have a semi-auto centerfire.

Inexpensive, fires full fledged rifle rounds, high capacity, and gives the antis more nightmares than any other firearm.

Also a Marlin 1894c lever gun. Shoots .357 mag or .38 special. Use the .38s for fun and .357s for some added power if you need it.

I like my paper punchin fun in a slower gear.

Also a Marlin 1894c lever gun. Shoots .357 mag or .38 special. Use the .38s for fun and .357s for some added power if you need it.

.. and eventually add a single action revolver in the same cartridge. That's my fun set-up. A Marlin 1894c and a 4 5/8 Blackhawk .357 convertible with a 9mm cylinder option.

Neither of these were exactly cheap but very enjoyable, easily kept as future heirlooms and they won't chew up 500 rounds in a heartbeat.

In another light the action of the 1894c is quick, the recoil is virtually nothing and it sets right next to my 870 ready to rock for HD.

second the hi point 995 my buddy and i both got one a couple years ago. fun to shoot cheap to shoot and our daughters like them also. makes them feel like they are shooting something really powerfull when they get tired of plinking cans with 22s. just give them a milk jug of water and the hi point and watch the smiles.
another bonus in my book and im sure some will berate me for this is cleaning. in 2yrs and over 1k rounds ive never done anything but push a patch down the barrel. i figure when it jams ill send it in and let customer service clean it and check for worn parts.

+3 for the Sig 522, very accurate fun plinking gun. You can set it up for red dot plinking or (like mine) put a 3-9x optic and do some 65 yard plinking.
