BTW, the MSAR MCS looks badass. And 10mm!
Do huh? I wasn't aware of a 10mmAuto variant being offered...only a 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP (the one I plan to get). I imagine the 10mm will be uber popular.
Me?...I'd just really like to see a .357SIG or 7.62mmTok variant. Either would make the most out of the longer bbl (as would the 10x25mm to a lesser extent).

:)

i have to agree my mini 14 is my most favorite to shoot. i have some far more expensive rifles but i enjoy my mini the best. if you get one get the 580/581 series with the tapered barrel. or for a little more a vz58, which also are great rifles for the money. both use cheap ammo.

15-22

ck one of these out, alot fun and very economical to feed. have had no failures out of 1000's of rds. will digest about any .22 ammo....

Are are pretty useless in todays big modern new world, but they are also loads of fun to shoot and I have managed to kill a few coyotes and a number of raccoons using them, one with blackpowder loaded cartridges no less!:)

This is a collection of posts on another forum about the CMMG BB AR15 I ordered a couple of weeks ago:

Just picked up the CMMG Bargain Bin 1/7 twist chromed bore hand picked AR that I ordered a little over a week ago. They come coated with plenty of oil.

First impressions are that it is a NICE carbine! I might actually feel bad about getting the first few scratches on this one. I am going to hop on the band wagon of people saying these hardly look like something that has been knocking around in a crate or barrel somewhere. The only mark I could find was on the flash hidder.

DSC03867.jpg

Mine has a CMMG lower, M4 cut feed ramps and well staked gas keys.

I'm heading down to the man cave and run a feww patches down the bore, slap the EOTech on and put a few mags through it. More pic's to follow.

****If there is any areas you want to see close up let me know and I'll do my best.

UPDATE 1:

As I said in the Ordered a CMMG Bargain Bin Thread, it came in today so I thought I would post my first impressions.

After running a few patches through the barrel (it was dirtier than I expected...the only part dirty BTW) I headed out back to put some rounds through the new acquisition. While down in the basement I took an EOTech 512 (long battery compartment) off a middy and put it on the CMMG carbine. I loaded everything in the back of the truck and head out to the range. I ran down to set up the backer-board and target then head back to the bench.

The mags I used were a mix of 2 USGI, one old and one new, 2 Pmags, one older style and one newer without windows. I am new to the P-Mag game and it is my understanding there a few generations. All the P-Mags I have are the non-windowed versions, a few do not have the ability to have the cover snap on the bottom but most of them will take the cover on the bottom.

DSC03878.jpg

The ammo I used was a mix of different manufacturers and styles. Federal XM193, PMC 55gr FMJ, American Eagle 55gr FMJ, PMC 62gr steel core, Federal XM855 and Igman SS109. Yes I know it says American Eagle XM855 on the box. This was packaged in a Federal marked case, American Eagle box and loaded in Lake City brass. As far as the Igman goes, I bought this stuff years ago so if anyone can shed some light on it that would be great. It is black tipped with a red primer sealer.

First off, once I sit down I realize trying to shoot for accuracy isn’t going to happen this evening. The sun was setting directly behind the backstop. If anyone has a work-around for this when using an EOTech I would love to hear it.

I figured this would be a function test only at this point. I get set up, chamber a round and press the trigger…BANG…WAP. I got hit in the arm by the EOTech. When I had it on the middy it would allow the battery compartment to hang over the handguard. When I mounted it on the carbine I guess I didn’t realize the handguard was a titch higher so the mount didn’t completely lock down. I moved it back, tightened it up and tried again…this time no problems.

Once tight, I was able dial it in well enough to hit paper plates at 100yrds and with the sun directly in my eyes I felt pretty good about it. I loaded 10 rounds in each mag and fired some rapid and some slow without a single hiccup. The only thing I didn’t care for was the trigger reset, it seemed a bit “clicky”. I have 2 stage Rock Rivers in my other AR’s some maybe that is the difference. All the trigger group pins stayed in place which is more than I can say for the Bushmaster. All the mags dropped free and the bolt catch worked everytime.

DSC03880.jpg

I put 200 rounds through it tonight and hope to run more tomorrow with the sun at my back so I can get a better idea what kind of accuracy it’s capable of. I would buy another in a heartbeat, the market might go down a bit more, but it might not.

I have 719.00 into this one at this point since I opted for the handpicked version. This breaks down to 650.00 for the chromed bore, 1/7 twist, carbine, 25.00 for the handpicked option, 24.00 shipping and 20.00 FFL transfer fee. I also bought a rear Troy BUIS for 75.00 which should be here tomorrow.

I will post accuarcy results when I get a chance to get back out.

UPDATE 2:

I had a little bit of time this morning so I headed out to the range with the Bargain Bin AR. I found a local guy who had a Trijicon TA11D on an ARMS mount that I picked up pretty reasonable and thought I’d give it a try. I had also put smaller hand guard from my Bushmaster on so I could get the EOTech and the backup sights on the flattop at the same time.

I don’t have a true “rest” and I haven’t made up sandbags yet so I was using my Lead Sled…not the best set up when using an AR.

DSC03881.jpg

It took a bit of getting used to when using the illuminated triangle on the ACOG, I think I like the TA01 with the crosshairs better. It could also be the Shoot-n-See targets, the orange center seems to bleed into the illuminated triangle. I have also come to the conclusion that the trigger leaves much to be desired, I plan on doing something about that. It took about 10rds to get it somewhat on target and even then it seemed to settle in a bit low to my point of aim.

Here are the results of shooting 5 different types, weights and makes of ammo (I forgot to grab the Bosnian stuff). Since I sighted it in using the X-Tac 62 gr Green Tip, thats what I shot first. I shot 10rds of each type, at each target, from 100yrds.

DSC03890.jpg

Next was PMC Bronze 55gr (I am starting to REALLY like this stuff, it shoots well in the Bushy too) it's the only 55gr stuff that grouped well.

DSC03891.jpg

Then the Federal XM855 62gr Green tip (the best grouping for me today)

DSC03892.jpg

****I have two more pic's in the post below since I exceeded the 15 pic limit******

Lessons learned...

I need to come up with a better rest for sighting in AR's or anything with a pistol grip for that matter.

I think I am more of a crosshair guy when it comes to scopes, that triangle in the TA11D is pretty dang bright, there must be a way to dim it a bit.

The trigger on the Bargain Bin is a bit rough but it might smooth out with use.

The CMMG as not had a single FTF or FTE with 330rds through it.

I didn't have any Key-holing at 100yrds with the 55gr stuff and didn't have time today to move everything back to 200 yrds but hopefully soon.

Here the cost break down:

650.00 Chrome 1/7 twist
25.00 hand picked option
24.00 shipping
20.00 FFL transfer fee (I caught him on a good day, normally 25)
719.00 total

I would/will be buying another soon! I might go with a "luck of the draw" just to compare to the handpicked version.

ADDITIONAL AMMO PIC's

Here is the Federal XM193 55gr FMJ, not sure if it was me or what but it sure didn't seem to hit where I was pointing it:confused: The shots to the right are from when I was sighting it in. My fault, I should have taped over them.

DSC03895.jpg

Finally the American Eagle 55gr FMJ ::(:

Let me see...I have Two CMMGs that get shot a couple of times a month usually around 60 shots each hunting and paper holes. No defects.

Have 2 Bushmasters about the same amount of ammo expended. Extractor was broke on one new out of the box. It is fixed and has not given any new problems.

Del-Ton was my first AR. Had a trigger problem when first purchased. Thing wanted to pop off 2 to 4 rounds when shot. Called Del-Ton and they sent me a new complete trigger assembly. That was a year ago and again have not had problems since.

Anything mechanical can break. 30 million dollar airplanes return to the gate due to malfunctions before take-off.

Aim has Silverbear .223 ammo for $104. per 500 rounds the last time I bought some.

Fit and finish on all my ARs is excellent and not a dimes worth of difference in the way they function and shoot. No I don't go out and try to burn them up or try to capture bad guys while rolling around in the mud with them. I respect my equipment and try to take appropriate care of it. I just shoot and hunt, clean and squirt a few drops of Breakfree Clp. Works for me.

Thanks for the EXCELLENT posts on the CMMG bargain bin. Very informative!

CMMG actually has a store in Columbia, MO as I understand and that's not far from me. If I decide to go that route, maybe I can save some money by cutting out the FFL and I can handpick my own and save that fee too. Too many good choices at this point.

Cheap, minute of paper, centerfire.

I've had the same thought and have been thinking about a Kel-Tex sub2000 or a Hi-Point carbine.

There's talk of the 10mm in this thread:
Thanks for the info and link, Olympus. I even posted in that thread...must have forgotten about it, or simply written it off as conjecture.

:)

Now I've kind of narrowed it down between the CX4 in 9mm or the CMMG bargain bin.

I'm really leaning toward the CX4 because of it's short, handy, and I can find plenty of cheap ammo because I don't reload.

But I'm torn because the AR would be more versatile and I could change it around to do other things beside being a "fun gun". I always go hog hunting in the spring and the AR would better than the CX4. But I don't want to make some trip I take once a year to play a huge part in my choice because Lord knows I've got plenty of other guns to take on a hog hunt.

I'm just really torn. Anybody else ever get like this?

Well keep in mind you can always pick up a 9mm (or .22 or .45 or...) upper to your AR-15. Can't do 5.56/.223 in a CX4.

I'd suggest a 5.45x39mm AK or an inexpensive AR. CMMG has been running sales recently of S&W AR's near the $600 mark too, and if you can find one of those under $700 it would be both fun and practical. As far as AK's, I like my 7.62x39mm AK, but 5.45x39 is lighter, more accurate, and recoils less. Either one is a lot of fun to shoot, though.

I agree with the gent that mentioned the M1 Carbine...though it seems you like the modern mechanical look of a rifle...the AK and variants are a boor and have a stigma attached...if you want something modern but with history, pick up a used FN Fal, you can buy NATO brick ammo on the cheap. Best bet, go to the range, mention your interest and most folks will let you try out what they own. And offer to pay for the ammo...your offer will be turned down for the ammo but put it out there...good luck.

Keltec pmr-30 in .22 win mag

Centerfire only at this point.

For affordable ammo and a semi-auto rifle in a caliber larger than .22, any good SKS (No grenade launcher is needed-or you have grenades?).

The SKS was in the original running, but I think it's going to be too heavy for fun off-hand shooting. But I have always liked the Yugos! Maybe one of these days.

I like the M1 Carbine too! My dad has one and it's a blast to shoot. But the ammo is just a little on the high side for fun shooting, at least for my pocketbook. The same with the FAL. And I'd think that there would be a considerable difference in recoil compared to a 9mm carbine or .223? Wouldn't be a big deal under normal circumstances, but I'm looking for a gun I can go out and run a few hundred rounds through at some old watermelons, pumpkins, 2 liters, etc.

If you reload the ammunition price of .30Carbine isn't too bad; furthermore factory ammo comes in 50rnd. boxes (like pistol ammo) so it isn't quite as bad as it seems (though it still isn't notably cheap or easy to find). Also recoil is a non-issue, IMO similar to .223Rem. but slower and longer (more of a shove...by a baby).

:)

I don't reload, so the availability of cheap, steel-cased ammo for fun shooting is going to be a big factor in my decision.

I was referring to the FAL in regards to recoil.

I was referring to the FAL in regards to recoil.
LOL, if I would have read more carefully, I should have noticed that. As fun as a FAL is, it is no plinker by any stretch (though i'm not certain that is a bad thing ;)). WRT .30Carbine ammo costs (and more importantly availability), I think you are right to avoid it, if you have no plans to reload...at least for the use described. The cheapest factory ammo available looks to be 7.62mmTok., 9mmPara, 5.45x39.5mm, 7.62x54R, and 7.62x39mm (roughly in order of price), and assuming availability is a concern 9mm is the obvious choice.

:)

About the cheapest that I've found 9mm is about $0.18/round. What can I expect to pay for the cheapest .223 per round? I'm talking Silver Bear, Wolf, whatever.
