Yes, a good 22 revolver is expensive. There is a reason for that.

They're worth it.

Go ahead. Bite the bullet and get a Smith & Wesson. I'm a fan of the old blue Model 17's and 18's, but the 617's are good too.

Get a good one, and it will last you the rest of your life. You will shoot it more than you do any other gun you'll ever own. When you break the price you pay down over time, it is pennies.

I'll bet you won't find many people who'll tell you they're sorry they didn't get something cheaper.
I like the S&W 617 and like the SP101 as a second choice.

I've also compared the Charter with the 617, similar but the trigger pull is so much nicer on the S&W and for a few dollars more, I'd rather have the Smith.

Although they retracted the production of the new SP101, I'll be waiting to see if it surfaces in the last quarter of 2011. They wouldn't have a rumor without a physical specimen (poor form to say they have NO plans of manufacture, why not build some hype). Depends on your application. Range exclusively, I would spend the coin on a smith with a 6 inch barrel. Yes its expensive but it is built with the quality of a centerfire revolver only the tolerances for a small cartridge with ten holes may be a bit tighter. Field carry, get a single action ruger, you will probably fire your DA in SA most of the time for accurate game shots anyway, and you won't be reloading frantically with six shots. If something sticks around to be shot at a seventh time, then it is probably comatose. If you want an all around plinker/fieldcarry, I'm following my own delusions in hopes that an overbuilt, no question reliable, field ready sp 101 will be produced....eventually
