Recommendations for .45

The XD's are my personal favorite plastic gun. The M-P is pretty good too. Something people seem to overlook is the P-90 & P345 Rugers. Check those out while your looking for another 45.

Are you really sure you want or need a double stck??? The grip area is much thicker and the guns heavier, neither feature being a plus when carrying.

CPshooter,
"Kahr P45 if you want the best carry .45 money can buy."

What have your experiences been with it? Mine are not good and no response from Kahr service dept..

I really like my Springfield XD 45 ACP, 13 rounds of 45 firepower in a pretty solid platform easily concealable with a good holster. It has been pretty reliable over 600 rounds and given the chance I would buy it again.

It doesn't fit me as well as my Sig P229, nor is it as reliable (both of our XD handguns are somewhat picky on ammo, and lack of second strike can be a problem) for that reason I carry the Sig. The XD was the first polymer handgun I liked, I generally find them to be stiff, rough, and cheap feeling.

I also have a Ruger P90 that has been 100% reliable, has very moderate recoil, and is very accurate but it is only 7 or 8+1 depending on magazines.

I am looking at picking up a H&K USP in 45 ACP sometime soon.

Tanfoglio Witness P-F 45 ACP, 10 +1 capacity, Polymer frame. Think of it as a Baby Desert Eagle chambered in a more meaningfull caliber;).

I have been thinking along the same as you, I have a Colt 70's ser. .45 and would like a high cap, something exactly the same only different :) I have owed two Glock 9mm's and won't go down that road again. I have shot a G-36 one FTF in 50rnds but the same old story it dose not point well for me. I've shot a XD-40 and XD-40 compact they were nice, but I'm a 1911 guy. I'm not a alloy frame fan, and think the HK is the caddy of semi-autos but a little too $. My interest is with the FNP-45 I look forward to shooting one, nothing else out there strikes my interest.

I just got an XD .45 ACP. I am a confirmed "Glock Guy", BTW. I have four Glocks: 17,19,23 & 37. Glock 21 is just a tad to thick to be comfortable. I actually love the .45 GAP model 37, it fits my hand but ammo...getting hard to find in my neck of the woods!

After shooting an XD at my gun club in .45, I found that it fit my hand. It was comfortable and accurate too. Recoil is not a factor with me, so I'm not including it. Take down is simple, very Glock like. Even with 14+1 it is comfortable to carry, altho finding decent leather for it wasn't as easy as other pistols. My buddy Sam Andrew's of Andrew's Leather in Gainesville, FL had one on hand and that problem was fixed. Carries nice too, altho that might be Sam's design.

All in all, I really like the XD and am happy with my purchase.

Go with your gut on either the M&P or the XD. I've never wanted two similar guns because I like variety. I like my M&P 9mm so much, however, I'm seriously considering the M&P 45. For what it's worth, I also have an XD9 which I'm selling in favor of the M&P.

I have read that some of the M&P 45's seem to have a problem with their finish--especially the take-down lever and the extractor. You might not want to buy one online (sight unseen) for that reason.

If not the M&P, you should definately buy a used Auto Ordnance 1911A1 or Republic Arms Patriot 45. Oh, did I mention that I'm selling both of those pistols right now?

Seriously, though, I really like the M&P platform and while I prefer it over the XD, I don't think you'd be disappointed in either one.

Save your money and get a Glock. Why pay high prices for inferior products or products that perform ALMOST as good, but for 300,400,500,600+ dollars more?

I just suggested the M&P and stand by that. But I read another post advising you to consider the Ruger 45s.

I own a Ruger P345 and really like it. The M&P would still be my preference but if you prefer a DA/SA trigger or want to save a few bucks, the Ruger P345 has been very reliable and is actually a lot of fun to shoot.
