Red Dot in 9mm?

Alliant used to list 4.5 MAX Red Dot with a 125 lead bullet.
It should work just fine with a 115 too.

4.3 is a pet round with Berry's 115. Have not been able to use Red Dot with Lead in the Glock though, but that is a whole different problem. Its my favorite 9mm powder as of now.

RC has it right I looked my Alliant manual but I've never used the 'max' load in mine I use 4.2. cycles my 5906 with a 2lb over factory recoil spring fine and shoots a good group better than BE actually. clean too. and cheap to load.

I use Red Dot only in all my pistol calibers. My 9mm load is 4.3 with a 124g lead bullet. Its fast but my guns like it, makes my Luger run very well so I just use it for a P38, Polish Radom, and a 1944 Browning High Power. Also does well in a modern BHP and a CZ75.

Be careful and try to use all the SAME brass. Interior case volumes vary greatly and with lead bullets its possible to get loads 'hotter' than you expected. (Had a batch end up with some loads a LOT hotter than I wanted using 4.5gr red dot and 115gr lead bullets.)

Dr.Rob, why would it be different with lead bullets than FMJ or platted?

I just started reloading 9mm, but I can tell you that the same weight FMJ and lead bullet have different charge weights and measurements in my Lyman manual.

I've loaded 4.2 grs of Red Dot behind a 115gr jacketed bullet and they ran 1,134 fps from my Beretta 92. Below is Alliants previous 9mm data showing Red Dot loads and what Speer recommends with their swaged 125gr LRN. Red Dot fills the 9mm case up nicely so there's no chance of over charge and the loads are very consistant.

Note that Red Dot, being a shotgun powder, has relatively big flakes, and may not measure consistently in 9mm doses. I used to make this mod to my powder measure for consistent powder drops.

Steve C, thank you kindly for the scans. I don't have that Alliant data in my library. Much appreciated.

I ran a quantity (lbs) of Red through my 9mm using 128 grn LRN sized to .356 and 3.8 grs R D worked fine pleasant to shoot, little dirty but cleaned up well.
