i don't have any experience w/ red dot type scopes. i am looking at putting a nikon monarch red dot on a rifle. not sure which one, but i am thinking either a 45-70 ruger #1 loaded to full honk... a second option would be a desert eagle 50... at any rate, my question is how durable are these types of optics?

i'd kinda like to try one, but don't know anybody that runs one, and there may be a very good reason they are not popular around here...

thanks for any feedback!

The two units I've been in in the Army have M68 red dot optics standard on M4's and M16's, with some being put on M240 and M249 machine guns, and they very rarely have to be fixed. The most common problem is the brightness knob falling off. Those optics are rock solid.

Get a good brand, with a good warranty and you can't go wrong. These things can take a beating, the M68's in any case. good luck!

My millet red-dot has stood up to me, and thats saying something. :D I mounted it on a AR, one of which i try not to baby too much, i have tried to get it to fail before. Neither the rifle or the sight has yet.

The USCG HITRON guys put EOTechs on .50 cal rifles for shooting the engines on go-fast boats down around Miami, so 45-70 shouldn't be a problem for anything built to around mil-spec. Not sure on the specific model you mentioned.

The M68s are tough but pricey. You could buy (30) $20 BSA scopes for the price of one M68 and they will be just as accurate. Although they likely will wear out faster.

I have an aimpoint on my M1 Garand and it has seemed to hold up fine. I've only had it to the range a couple of times, but it's held zero and added another level of versatility.

I threw an inexpensive Centerpoint red dot scope (the one with the red and green $49) from Wally World on my 308 and it's funtioned great so far.

Which one if I may ask?

I mounted one of the Center Point R/G on my M/44 and it has held up well to date...........conversely, I stuck a BSA that was given to me on an M/6 Hornet,.410 and the erector fell off after a half dozen rounds..............epoxied it back in place and it's worked well so far...........but then as everyone says, cheap glass is just that.
