I have an 11-48 that is a great shooting gun and is a good looking gun but the stock has seen it a better days. Last year I left it in a case too long and the stock got sticky and dark, now has a checkerboard effect from the eggshell foam in the case. The metal bits are nearly perfect so I want to strip this stock and put a new finish on. I'm thinking about a lighter finish or a finish that will make the wood grain pop. what wood would my stock be? And what stains would really look nice on a Remington autoloader?

It is very likely walnut.

I wouldn't stain it at all if you want lighter & the grain to pop.

Once you get it stripped & finish sanded, wet it with water to whisker the grain.

While it is wet, Thats about what it will look like with a Tru-Oil finish.

Instead of stripping it, you might want to try a mild (non-petroleum base) soap and water first. Apply with a cotton rag. The stock may come out very nice afterward.

Thanks

I recommend the French red stain and True Oil Hand rub Finish. That's the closest to factory on those older models. If you take your time and don't rush it you will be quite pleased with it. Thanks Bobby

Start with Murphy's Oil Soap and clean it. Then get a book about refinishing furniture. Same products and techniques.
I'd be thinking pure tung oil vs Tru-oil. Tru-oil is a tung oil finish. That's tung oil mixed with other oils and drying chemicals. Isn't the same as pure tung oil. Pure tung oil gives a hard, waterproof, shiney(more of a sheen), finish. Brings out wood grain nicely. Even on woods with little grain.
