Registration of Home-Made Sound Suppressor

Hmmm... maybe I could run for AG. When I get elected, I'll exempt everyone with valid federal registration from the law :D

The police in WA are only exempt from the WA state law that makes it a gross misdemeanor to USE any device to reduce the report of a firearm. This has nothing to do with federal law at all. :)

Once upon a time...

It used to be that only the supressor outer tube was the registered part. That is, this is what has the serial number on it and is "registered" when you pay your $200 for the tax stamp. Whether you use screens, rivets, or spiral-machined parts none of them have serial numbers on them. So how is this supposed to be enforced?

Yeah, enforcement of internal parts, none of which the ATF will ever see before or after etc, they cannot consistently enforce that.

Gross misdemeanor, eh? What's involved with that? If no loss of 2A rights, then it's just like getting a speeding ticket except with a bigger fine and possible jail time? Or is it worse than that?

To the OP, no.

Each suppressor must be individually registered on Form 1.

If you destroy it you do not get a $200 refund.

In WA a gross misdemeanor is 6 months in jail and/or a $1000 fine. I'm sure they will find a way to take the suppressor away too.

It is rare that the ATF will see anyone's suppressor, form 1 or other. You will only get in trouble for extra parts if you give them some reason to think you have them laying around. Others have been caught by local police when their property is searched for some other reason.

When you make a form 1 suppressor, make it the best you can, make it right the first time. I have a letter from the ATF that says parts (wipes and other) can be replaced, but can not have extras laying around.
