Ironically, since the argument is now between two government entities, rather than a private owner vs. the feds, I find myself less sympathetic over the monetary loss.

This is in New England. Many public libraries in smaller New England towns were founded by private donations and continue to exist as private organizations, even if they receive some funding from the town. Notice the article mentions that the machine gun was originally given to a library "trustee." Municipal agencies do not have trustees.

A few years ago I was involved in an addition and renovation project for a small "public" library in a small New England town. That library is open to the public, but it is almost entirely privately funded. Their expansion project was 100% privately financed except for a seed grant from the state library commission -- which would have had no dog in the fight if something like this machine gun had been part of the scenario.

I think President Bush should resolve this with an Executive Order.
