I posted about this here. I just thought more people might see it in this section of the forum. RR pants on sale for 19.93 plus a 20% off coupon (code GEAR929).

These appear to be the pants with the spare mag (gun content) pocket on the right thigh.

Mods. If this isn't gun related enough, please feel free to take appropriate action.

I am not going to tell anyone NOT to buy from REI, but I feel that I should inform THR members and they can make their own decision.

REI has a history of donating equipment (and possibly funds) to some of the more extremist enviromental groups. (I'll do some digging and see if I can find citation).

IIRC; they arn't a major supporter, but I feel that some of these groups are dangerous and divorced from reality. They should not be encouraged even if they ARE trying to save the enviroment.

I am not a big proponent of blacklisting, but i don't buy from REI. Also their is a cheeper, locally owned, outfitter in Spokane where I get all my gear.

*I'll see if I can find some documentation, but I thought THR should be aware of this.

I can't say anything about REI and extremest groups, but I wouldn't doubt that they support groups with a strong environmental bent. You will notice they don't have any refrences to hunting or fishing in their stores.

What I can say, is they have had my business for 12 years and have offered the best customer service I have recieved from any company (including firearms related companies). I once returned a 3 year old backpack--used hard and beginning to fail at stress points-- and received a full credit towards a brand new pack. If I'd have asked, I'd have had $$ instead. I don't always like visiting the "yuppy outdoor themed stores" but the website is a good example of how ecommerce should work.

At any rate, I thought it was a good deal on pants, and I thought it might be fun to buy something from them that would be put to use for a task I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate. BTW: I used my REI visa to buy my last 4 guns. Just my way of earning free gear and sticking it to the liberal man!

REI does have great products for the most part (Wisper-lite stove :barf: ), and great customer service. In fact I would probably still buy from them if their wasn't a better store with just as good selection and generally cheeper prices not 5 blocks from REI.

After doing some digging on the Intra-Web I couldn't find any hard facts, just a lot of hersay (so I guess you can add this to it). Here's what I know:

REI gives out grants and equipment packages to local enviromental groups. They give out quite a few of these (I think something like 160 grants a year). This sounds like a good thing b/c everyone wants to protect the enviroment. However, (and this is hersay) a few of the groups have had strong anti-hunting, anti-logging, and anti-recreation stances. Now this doesn't mean that from every $1, $.50 goes to PETA; it is more like $.00000000001 of every $1.

Many people may not view this a much of a problem, and I am not trying to keep people from buying from REI. I am simply trying to make THR members aware that, in the past, REI has supported anti-hunting and other extremist groups (however minor that support was).

Edit: I am still looking for credible sources, As I said this is currently hersay so take it with a buick-sized grain of salt. REI has given out Approx. $8 Million since 1976 http://www.rei.com/aboutrei/releases/youth.html most of this has been to groups like the Sierra Club. If/when I find hard evidence I will post it here, I simply put this up because I know that some members are picky about what companies spend thier money on.

If this is too much skepticism, Mods please delete my posts.

Come up with some credible references for the assertion that REI has done anything for any of us to disapprove of before calling for THR members to boycott them. Gossip doesn't become THR members.

On a related note, just moments ago I got an e-mail from 5.11 announcing that they have their tactical shirts and pants in kids' sizes. Cool.

:scrutiny:

I still don't see any facts indicating that they've done anything for memebers to be opposed to. If anyone's got anything more than hearsay it would be good to see it.

Thefabulousfink, I'm honestly not trying to pick on you. This is for everyone. We so many members makeing assertions that couldn't be backed up in so many areas I'd love to see our members to try a littler harder to fact check information that they're putting out. Makes us look like cousins to the anti letter writers that can't get their facts strait at times. :uhoh:

Thanks USP Fan!

Hey Thanks!

I just ordered a pair $15.93 with the coupon (tax extra) - I can pick them up at a store near my work so no shipping charges either.

Looks like a good buy to me.

Retraction

Well It may appear that I have gone off half-cocked.

After searching on every page that Yahoo and Google turned up I could not find any solid connection between REI and extremist groups. I found plenty of message board repeated the claim but never any harder evidence than "REI gives money to Sierra Club, Sierra Club give money to X, X tries to close down trails, ban hunters, etc."

So for the lack of any hard evidence I retract my statement.

I initailly hear this rumor from several independet sources, but one in particular lead me to believe it. I was camping with a man who's word I respect deeply and he told me that he doesn't shop at REI any more. This man runs an independent public relation firm that had been contracted to represent a logging company out of California. He told me that REI had donated equipment to groups that were protesting the company logging on private land and MAY be responsible of some of the eco-terrorism that had been accuring.

This may be true and it may be false, however, since I cannot find any evidence online I will not add any more to the hearsay.

Maybe I'm blind but I can't find the 5.11 stuff on thier site, even searching by manufacturer.

Along the same token, you can get the digital camo 5.11 pants for pretty cheap ($15) from http://www.lapolicegear.com/5tapa.html.

There are other deals there too, such as buy 2 pairs of pants and get a free belt. IIRC, this deal is also available from the offical 5.11 homepage.

REI will donate or discount to just about any "human-powered" recreational group, if they think it will promote goodwill and more sales. Sure, there are some extreme environmental groups in there (but then, we probably have some extreme environmentalists on this site right now), but I know for a fact that they've donated to hunting and fishing friendly groups, too.

Kevlarman, I think every item on that site said tactical, lol.........

Tactical mug? Tactical Hat?

I just got the LA Police Gear catalog yesterday. I believe it was made of some form of Tactical paper, my name was printed in a Tactical font, and it was delivered to my Tactical mailbox, which is in front of my Tactical house.

My Tactical dogs barked when the Tactical USPS truck dropped of the Tactical catalog.

No kidding...A LOT of "Tactical" items in that catalog:D !!!

They sell good material for making your own rifle slings. And their Customer Service has always been top notch, for me. Maybe a little left of me in their politics, they nevertheless offer an excellent range of outdoor gear.

And not carrying any firearms related stuff means they present no threat to Mom & Pop gun stores.

I've worked on trail projects sponsored by REI where they paid for the late Jim Angel (sp.?) out of OR to come up and train folks on how to build and repair trails the right way. About the only extremism present was the amount of sweat being exuded.

I also have good friends that work at REI or have worked there in the past. Lots of good folks, some twinkies, some nut jobs. Probably not much different than any corporation that size in the NW (personal bias - they've not been a "coop" in quite a while).

Not really gun related, and I should close this thread.

However, you happened to post this at the exact moment I was thinking to myself "Gee, I sure do need some new pants."

This is likely true. On the other hand, around here, they are sending a lot of money to groups who are trying to essentially destroy our access to motorized outdoor activities and shooting areas. It gets harder every year to find public land to shoot or ride a dirt bike and REI is doing a lot to make it impossible. They are a good company and they sell good products, but if you like to play with motorcycles, ATVs, or guns on public land, they are not playing for you team.
