Hi there yall:

I'm fairly new to reloading but have been a shooter fer a looong time (bout 35 years). This is my first post in the reloading forum. I can figure out most of the abbreviations, like RN for Round Nose, FN for flat nose, HBWC for hollow base wad cutter, and SWC for semi-wad cutter, etc. But, where can I find a glossary or dictionary of all the terms for all the various bullet types? Anybody want to see how many they can name? Thanks,:D

REloading Lingo

Most of the lingo you are looking for are in the loading manuals or the brochures put out by the various powder companies. Go on line and request one from Hodgdon...their's is excellent.

"tump"

-results in spilled powder and if reloading shot-shells ..."all them pellets" spilling onto floor.

Not in the THR library, not in any reloading manuals I ever read...
Goodness knows how hard I tried to get "tump" in the reference books...:)

Mal H, just nod your head in agreement...

The acronym section does not have "OAL" which means "Over All Length".
That measures to the tip of the bullet, which may not be consistant when the seater is pushing on the ogive.

I measure THAT, and length to the ogive as measured with a Sinclair bullet comparitor.

FL full lenth (sizing)
TIR total indicated runout (measuring concentricity)

Bullet bases:

FB flat base (almost never used, usualy assumed if BT or RBT isn't specified)
BT boat tail
RBT rebated boat tail
BB bevel base
HB hollow base
GC gas check
PP paper patch
DE double ended (a wierd one typically a DEWC; double ended wad cutter, but a hell of a long time ago there were double ended spitzer type bullets but they have disapeared being displaced by boat tails)

Bullet tips:

HP Hollow point
SP soft point
WC Wadcutter
SWC Semi-wadcutter
RN Round nose
FP flat point
TRN tapered round nose

VLD very low drag (usualy has a secant ogive and a long boat tail)

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll look at the reference places you listed. I also looked at the list archives too. Guess, I'd figured em out eventually - usually as I see one I didn't know. Hey "Creeker" I used to live in So. Charleston for a spell- now i'm up north.

I've also been lookin for a set of dies and load info for 32 Win. Special - not a lot that I've been able to find out there. Very limited factory loading- when you can find them-usually only a 170 grain up front.

FMJ- Full Metal Jacket
SWC- Semi-Wadcutter, also available jacketed.
FMJSWC-The two combined.
TMJ- Total Metal Jacket, actually an enclosed base plated bullet. (Speer)
RNSWC- Typically lead SWC with a round nose where the bearing surface is true caliber and the ogive is started from a smaller diameter.
DEWC- Double Ended wadcutter.
BNWC- Button Nose wadcutter.
BBWC- Bevel Base wadcutter.
HBWC- Hollow Base wadcutter.
FP- Flat Point, lead or jacketed.
RNFP- Roundnose Flat Point. (Don’t ask me who thought that one up.)
TC- Truncated Cone, lead and jacketed.
JHP- Jacketed Hollow Point.
HP-XTP- eXTreme Performance JHP. (Hornady)
FP-XTP- Same with a soft or flatnose.
XTPBT- Same bullet in 9mm 147 gr. with a boattail
FMJBT- FMJ with a boattail. (Hornady)
FMJ-FP- FMJ with a flat nose. (Hornady)
GS- Remington Golden Saber. (another personal favorite)
GD- Speer Gold Dot, JHP; sometimes abbreviated as GDHP.
HS- Federal Hydra Shok, center post JHP
SXT- Winchester Supreme eXpansion Talon; a slightly modified Black Talon.
ST- Winchester SilverTip
JHC- Jacketed Hollow Cavity. (Sierra)
X-Bullet - a HP made almost completely of copper, very deadly. (Barnes)

Hope that helps,
hipobrow
