Going to be traveling from El Paso to Florida along the I-10 corridor in May.

Looking for any recommendations for brick and mortar stores (local or big box) along the way that might be worth stopping at to see if they have any components in stock.

I know it's a long shot (groan) but maybe get lucky?

Thanks

If you just want to make a bunch of useless stops, it might be better to just drive a bus full of girl's there. :)

I turned a 6 hour trip into a 7.5 hour one a month or so ago, so I understand where your coming from, good luck.

I don’t know the area, but your plan is solid.

1 thing I’ve noticed, get to the store at the opening bell. Seems they stock in the evening and sell out pretty early. Anyways, that’s the case with my closest Cabeals, Scheels, Sportsmans.

@jmorris LoL, El Paso to Beaumont/Port Arthur is 800 miles all on its lonesome.
It's about a two day drive as is, and another 800 miles to Jax.

Might be some small shops to hit up in Fort Stockton or Kerrville. Probably have to get a long way off the road to find a good place in San Antonio. There had been a real nice old-fashioned LGS there in Seguin, but I was last there about 2 decades ago. Getting across metro Houston is going to be an ordeal of its own for only being 50-60 miles (but can be 4-5 hours depending upon the day and time) which may not invite much stopping.
You'll need specialist knowledge of the Golden Triangle (Beaumont/Port A/Orange) as the only things I searched out there was better Po'Boy sammiches.

Used to be some nice LGS in Laq Charles and Lafayette.

Yeah, the trip I did was North/South vs West/East to Rockport through La Grange. I figured anything along a major highway would be cleaned out, the small ones were. Some didn’t even know what Aguila was... I did have a vehicle full of girls though and my wife caught on after the 2nd “curiosity stop” I made for them. :)

@moranna

Simple advice -
  • make a list of what you want,
  • take the recommendations you get here and in your internet search, and make some phone calls.
  • Otherwise, you are going to make a long drive longer.
@CapnMac hit the nail on the head about El Paso heading east. He is especially correct about the greater Houston area. Time your travel appropriately. For giggles - it is a slightly shorter drive from El Paso to Los Angeles, than El Paso to Beaumont, TX.:what:

A good store in the Houston area is 10-Ring. As of Saturday (27May), not much in terms of primers, powder, or brass. Some dies and machines. Great people, and fair! Give them a call with your “want list”

I've heard good things about 10 Ring.
.
I am generally in 10 Ring weekly. It provides a good barometer of the market place. It is one of the best “pure” reloading shops I have visited (they do have an attached gun store, but their business is mostly reloading). King Shooters in King of Prussia, PA and Shyda’s in Lebanon, PA are both good, also. Ray’s Hardware in Dallas used to be good, but I have not been there in over 30 years. I do not know if Powder Valley has a store front, but it would be fun to go if they did.

@CapnMac if you are stopping in Tomball, consider hitting the following (only 10 Ring and Carters are into reloading supplies):

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Will map out suggested locations and try to hit 3 or 4 along the way.

Desperate times.......

try maping all shop on your route. Call all of them as you get 30 minuets away and ask!

You all really gonna send him to Tomball and Magnolia all the way off of I 10. I guess he could take 99 around to Tomball but good Lord that is a drive for a non native Texan. To the OP see what's in Katy. There is an Academy or 2 on I 10 and stop at Carter's on I 10...
