Remington 1858 & 1860

Do you have any links to the examples you're referring to? Something doesn't sound right. Colt barrels can be removed easily. The Remington New Army (AKA 1858) barrels not so much.

The .44 caliber Remington New Model Army belt pistol was patented in 1858 and production started in 1861. Several companies make or have made replicas in both .36 and .44 calibers. Remington also produced several pocket pistols but the only one that I have seen reproduced is the 1863 spur trigger model. None of these barrels would interchange. The 1860 nomenclature usually refers to the Colt Army belt pistol in .44 caliber and its barrel will not interchange with any of the Remington models.

The various Colt models will accept additional barrels.

The Pietta offers a few more barrel lengths including an Avenging Angel and 12" Carbine (1851 style .44 cal). They also don't suffer from a short arbor.

From what I see across the forums is that Uberti makes a superior Remington and Pietta makes a superior Colt, that in reverse there are many little things to fix.

I wanted an Uberti Remington for Christmas '03, but the $199 with free starter kit (nearly worthless unless you have nothing) and free shipping from Cabelas (being a Pietta) easily changed my mind.

And what I found with mine is the typical way undersized chambers (0.446") which were reamed to 0.449" and chamfered, a hammer face too wide to securely engage the safety slots that I filed and sanded to fit, a loading window/port improperly designed making it impossible to load conicals/bullets that I ground and sanded to use my custom bullets, hand and stop with sharp edges that I smoothed slightly, grip panels that didn't fit well and where a bit large (both historically and firmly smaller hands) and with a reddish stain I don't care for so they were sanded and stained, and a front sight I can't adjust as it shoots a few inches to the left at 15 yds. I've also heard of a few accounts in which the sight and/or lever catch have fallen off.

I'd assume a Pietta Remington would still have way undersized (my understanding is that Uberti has ~.450" chambers compared to both haveing a ~.452" bore) chambers and maybe I'll fitting grips, buts that's about all I read complained about, unlike an Uberti model. I'm speaking of the newer models.

My Pietta shoots pretty well. Where I get about 3-3.5" groups at 15 yds shooting offhand with my Ruger, I'm getting about 3.5-4" groups with my Remington. But then I'm no pistolero and I use an adjustable rifle measure marked in 10 grain increments. I've only tried powder charges by ~5 grains starting at 25 grains as my guns are for hunting and I require a fair amount of oomph to feel comfortable that they have enough velocity/energy to be humane using modern cartridges as a guide. And that goes down a different topic...
