Took a brand new Rem 597 .22LR out this morning for a first run.

Ammo was Federal 40gr Hi Velocity solid.

All I did prior to use was run a couple patches thru the barrel. Crud was present inside.... :scrutiny:

I took 200 rounds along but only got through around 60. This thing is a JAMM-O-MATIC. Practically every other round failure to extract or failure to feed. Several clicks with no bang. At 50 yards I managed a couple silver dollar + sized groups with the iron sights, but the frequency of no fire / clearing made the 10 shot mag good for only around 4 or 5. Tried under loading the mag (it's a metal one and not plastic) to 5, 6 and 7 rounds, made no difference. Now I'm really mad. :cuss:

Flustrated I set it aside and pulled out ole reliable AK and GP100 to vent on unsuspecting coffee cans. Ahhh, the joys of things that work like they are supposed to.

So..... Thinking back to the crud in the barrel... Brand new, never been fired... I'm gonna tear this 597 thing down to tiny parts and give it a motherful scrubbing. Gonna take it back out all cleaned and reassembled for a refire. If it still sux a$$ then the next trip will be to the gun/pawn shop to try and recoop some of my wasted money.

if you could be alittle more specific about your jams
we,might be of some help.

but 1st,i'd try acoupla different kinds of ammo:)

ok

here's a recap.

bang, click, ? cleared, bang, .... failure to eject. clear, bang, .... failure to eject again. clear, bang, click again... repeat all of the above with 60-70 rounds.

sometimes the round would not go off. sometimes the spent case didn't eject properly and the bolt could not close on the next shot. sometimes the next round didn't feed. best stretch i had was 5 consecutive shots.

just got done taking it apart and cleaning. NOT impressed by this design. bolt rides on dual spring loaded shafts. they are torqued with set screws thru the rear of the reciever. they don't seem to have enuff oomph to get the bolt to engage completely and tightening beyond the recommended numbers causes the springs to bind. these spring loaded shafts are a son of a b to reassemble too. also noticed some roughness on the bolt face where the extractor comes thru. attempted to clean this up to smooth out the action.

my guess is the failure to eject was extractor issue. Failure to fire is the bolt not engaging all the way.

it's a double lemon combo madness. :barf:

Try loosening the rails that the bolt and springs ride on a little bit, seems to make my friend's and ex-gf's work better.

It's the mags...My brother in law had the same problem with his 597. Remington has made three mag revisions to try and correct the problem. My brother in law says they finally got it right on the third try. He contacted Remington and they sent him the latest and greatest mag and he hasn't had the constant ftf and fte problems with the new one. Good luck.

...

Thanks Mr. Two Guns, I will give that a try.

I took it out again this morning after loosening the rails as suggested. This was also mentioned on a Rimfire forum. Didn't really help. Initial 10 rounds only fte once, but it got progressively worse till I was back to every other shot.

Very frustrating. Shame on you Remington. :cuss:

I got a 597 for my son and it was a "jam-o-matic" also, bought a new mag and it still was a single shot! Sold the POS , got a Ruger 10/22 and never looked back.

1) The screws should be just touching the guide rods. Tightening them down bends the rods, causing the bolt to bind up. Sounds like this was most of your problem. Screws are to be just barely finger tight.
2) Try other ammo. Rimfires tend to be EXTREMELY ammo sensitive. It might not like Federal, try Winchester.
3) Ensure you have the 3rd generation magazines. They should be metal bodied with a "10" in a circle.
4) New guns have usually been test fired at the factory. They need full cleanings before the first range trip. I pulled the rods, springs, and the bolt out of mine and swabbed everything good.

See the Remington section on www.rimfirecentral.com for more help. The 597 is a good gun; I love mine.

Shame on you Remington.

I went through the same thing about 6 years ago with the 597 jammomaticI ended up selling it for a loss and was glad to get rid of it. Its a terribly designed turd of a rifle.I haven't bought another Remington since, and might never buy another again.I ended up selling it for a loss and was glad to get rid of it I don't buy the nonsense about semiauto rimfires being ammo sensitive- I've shot Browning, Ruger, and High Standard rifles and pistols and have never seen an issue with ammo causing malfunctions in any of them, maybe I just have higher expectations.

agreed

brand new this thing should work when i bring it home. shouldn't need to tear it apart and scrub a dub dub to make it function properly.

"if" it was in fact test fired at the factory then it should have never been put on a shelf for sale.

it "should" fire any widely available standard load, or it's a flakey design.

just checked and the magazine does indeed have a 10 in a circle on it. guess waiting on a new mag from Rem won't make it better. i backed the screws off last night which today made little difference. the boobs at remington say the things are supposed to be torqued to 10 inch pounds. perhaps those guide rods are already goobed up from factory torqing?

i've fired many types and calibers of rifles and handguns over 30+ years and have never experienced a weapon come up this short in function. i have a remington shotgun that's a peach of a weapon, but it was made a long time ago, and everybody gets/makes a lemon from time to time.

i've emailed their customer support but more than likely i'm just going to attempt to get rid of it.

adjust the rails, and get the corrct mags. Call remmy up , and see if they will trade yours out for free. they usually do, get at least 3rd generation mags. go to rimfirecentral, check out the remmy threads and check the mag stickies.

I have one, I've never cleaned it yet and with the factory mag with 5 rounds and a new mag with 10 rounds it runs ok. I admit it jams alot, but due to dirty mags and a weapon thats never been cleaned its ok. I think a ruger 10/22 would be better though.

I wonder how much I could sell mine for with 2 mags and a 3x9 tasco scope. Any ideas? The weapon is in decent shape.

597

I have had one for 6 years now. It also gams. Will not cycle more than one round, which is the first. Mine has been in my safe for 4 years. I thought I would give it another try over the weekend. Still the same. I need to sale it or give it away and buy a 10/22 or savage.

OK, now we see why I quit buying Remington firearms (and usually ammo, unless thats all that's available) many years ago...

Run (don't walk) back to the store, trade (or whatever) the 597 for a Marlin 60...be happy...

Direction

Hi all,

Well, up until a few hours ago, I was considering a 597. I think I'll rescope my 1962 Remington 521T and stay happy.

. . . .. . .. ..

There's your problem.Mine hates Federal and shoots flawlessly when using Remington golden bullets. Its 100 times better shooter than a 10/22 could hope to be.

So when you say hates, do you mean it jams practically every other shot, but operates without a problem eating a Remington diet? :scrutiny:

mine seems to run fine on the Federal Champion 40gr HV's... it also like the Rem bulk stuff... :shrug Not really sure which it likes better... but I have had no problems at all with mine... Quarter sized groups @ 50 - 60 yards... :neener:

I ran the patches through the barrel... then, when I got out to the range, I just hammered out the first magazine load... no real intent... just to let off some stress...

Uhmmm... if memory serves, my dads Nylon 66 was finicky about only Remmy ammo too... so, it wouldn't surprise me...

I have one of the first run 597's and if you really want to buy a rifle to mod the bejesus out of then sell it and buy a Ruger.

Or if you don't want to sink more money into a 22 rifle that you would have to Mod it so much that you can't count all the original parts,Buy a Marlin Model 60.

Marlin makes some of the best 22. Rifles in the world for the price.

Wow I guess I lucked out. I have had a 597 for about 3 years now, put a few thousand rounds through it and it works fine. It does jam every now and again but more often than not cleaning the mags fixes the problem.

All I use in it is the chepo Federal stuff you can get at Academy for $7 a 500 pack.

It sure does stink that yall have had a bad experiance.

It's a Remington---what did you expect???

The only decent gun they currently produce is the 870---and NOTHING else.

They have been selling the name for way too long----quality left years ago.
