I have a chance to buy one. Black stock blue barrel, It has the cheap plastic magazine, Guy wants a $100.00 for it. Is this worth it. I know I will have to replace the mag. Thanks

It's well worth the money, though the sights don't lend themselves well to super-precise shooting. Easily fixable with a scope.

Mags can be had for twelve bucks or so.

Academy Sports & Outdoors has NIB with aluminum mags for $149 (and a $20 Remmy rebate through the end of the year) or with a scope combo for $169. Both are identical - black plastic stock, blue barrel - except the combo has no sights on the barrel - only scope.

FYI...

Very accurate rifle. Mine (a magnum) had a heavy trigger which I fixed with an aftermarket hammer/sear. Now, it's pretty awesome and shoots 1.5 MOA. I have a 3x9 Bushnell on it AND the sights. The rear sight flips down out of the way. The scope is one of those 100 dollar Bushnell trophies.

I would not buy used unless he is a good friend and you know he is telling you the truth when he says that there is nothing wrong with it. 597 can be the jam-o-matic if this was one of the lemons in production. I bought new and got a great rifle it was only about $130 at Gander a few years back.

Most .22s are. Having the opportunity to buy one at 33% off retail ($150ish, last I checked) is a pretty good deal if it's like new and it works.

The 597 is a nice, solid gun for a hundred bucks.

I regret buying my 597(it jams and cant hit diddly squat), IMO get a manually operated .22. Bolt, pump, lever, whatever you like. It will save you a lot of frustration with ftf's and jams. Plus you will get way more accuracy for your money.

bought new .22lr 597 last year, with new and improved mags.

tested MANY different types of ammo.

choked on everything. tried all the usual net posted fixes to no avail.

remington did respond for me to send it in but i was tired of the whole affair and took a hit at a pawn shop.

I would advise you try before you buy, if possible.

I like my 597. I say buy it but you should probobly shoot it first.

The ones we bought for our Junior silhouette program jam all the time.

Who is loading the guns when they jam? You, or the kids? I ask because I do get jams but rarely at the fault of the gun. You have to be pretty careful when loading the magazine to make sure that the rim on the cartridge you're inserting doesn't get behind the rim of the round below it. That is the only reason my gun has ever jammed except twice when the bolt held open with one round left in the magazine. I have had FTF's but only with rounds out of a cheap brick of Remington .22lr.

though the sights don't lend themselves well to super-precise shooting. Easily fixable with a scope.

That's what I've found too. The sights on mine are supposed to replicate big game rifle iron sights IIRC. They don't lend themselves to precision shooting. With a scope though it is quite accurate.
