IMG_20200824_165933392_HDR.jpg Does anyone know why these 2 Remington 870 barrels are different? One fits my gun the other doesn't. Both are Remington factory 12ga. barrels. IMG_20200824_165942791_HDR.jpg

3 1/2" supermag barrel, probably.
Oops, forgot about the special field and I even had one once upon a time, long, long ago.

The shorter distance to bbl ring is for the special field.

It has a shorter mag tube and the cap holds the bbl at the end of the mag tube.

Unlike 1100 bbls, where special field and reg bbls will interchange

Supermag bbls will fit standard 12 ga 870s. Just have a longer chamber.
But then.....a reg 870 shouldnt cycle 3.5.....ejection port is longer on a supermag receiver and the bolt stroke longer

I have a supermag and have owned special fields. And a bunch of magnum standards

Special Fields are 21 or 23". Fixed choke or Remchoke.

There are turkey bbls for standard 870s that are also 21 and 23". The 23 stuff was later and all will be Remchoke. The 21s were fixed first, then Remchoke.

I dont think a Special Field bbl is marked for special field only. But......your receiver will say " special " on it if it is a special field.

There were some english stocked full.length mag tube 1187s.

But the 870 and 1100 special fields have a 1 round shorter mag tube and yes, it does change the feel of em.

Love me an 870 special field 20 ga.

Special Field. Not many of them made.

All others should fit, even the shorter turkey and deer barrels. The special field magazine held one less round and the mag tube was shorter to balance out the looks with the shorter barrel.

I bought a 12 gauge Special Field 870 about 8 years ago used at a gun show. It was barely shot, took it to the gun club and ran a 50 straight with it first time on skeet. Cleaned it and put it away, only shotgun I have never missed with. I guess I need to break it out of the safe and see if it can miss now.

There are three (3) different 870 barrels where the distance to the magazine tube band is the determining factor. The Special field is the shortest, the "standard" is next and is by far the most numerous, and the one piece extended length magazine version is the longest. I ave the distances from the chamber heel somewhere but I can't find it.

Agreed on the Special Field thoughts. I tried to stick a Wingmaster bbl on my SF a few years back, and immediately discovered that my master plan wasn't going to work. I had just assumed that it would fit.

This guy, who used to post on this board regularly, will probably be able to tell you exactly what the measured differences are in 870 barrels since he does combat conversions and upgrades... I had occasion to talk with him once or twice some years back - he's a Remington trained armorer among other skills... if I remember correctly.

I have hunted w 870 and 1100 special fields, in both 12 and 20 ga. Also ran 1100 and 870 standards, w 21" bbls (12 ga )

My supermag wears a 23" bbl ( turkey model, short enough for HD....and usable for wingshooting ).

If I am to run a special field, I want a 20 ga and in 870..21". Unfortunately prices have gone silly

Never cared for any 12 ga special field. They are too thick in look and feel.

To each his own. Some guys prefer the 12

Fwiw....Hastings used to make slug bbls for the special field....at least in 12 ga.

Thanks for the replies. I do believe the 21" barrel is a "Special Field". I reckon I'll have to find it a new home.
Pretty late to the party I know but wondering if you still have that special field barrel.
