Both the Remington Express and the Remington UMC 9mm 115 JHP produce 1155 fps. and 341 fpe. What is the difference between the two? Is one better than the other? How is the expansion and penetration of these two rounds?

Premium ammo I hear differs as it has flash retardant powder. May be true as I have have seem Speer GD plus P flash less than WWB non plus p 9x19.

Also, I believe premium ammo is sealed against moisture on the case mouth and primer. I suppose someone could ask Remington and see what they say.

I can't speak for the 9mm,as I have not tried it,but about 10 min ago I just left my dealer who had expansion tested the Rem express 155 gr hp alongside the 180 gr bonded golden sabre. (40 S&W)

The Golden Sabre easily went .80 cal in the test medium, and the Express load only lacked a little being as large, and you could visually confirm that the express smacked the test medium harder, and penetrated 14 in.
The 180 ge Sabre penetrated 16 in,both were fired from the same G22. We know that the Sabres are great in all calibers and weights, but the express load may well be a "sleeper" that performs right up there with the best on the market.

I'm curious too about the Remington UMC. They're the cheapest hollowpoints I've found out here for about $14/100. Are they good enough for carry or are the Golden Sabres/Hydrashocks/Talons/etc. that much better?

1557, that express load is the same load the border patrol uses. I just picked up several boxes for $10 (50 round boxes) at a clearance sale. It is a fantastic load.

As to the original question, pick up a box of each and see if you can tell any difference.

I have used the UMC ammo in 9mm and in .45 ACP and hav found both to be reliable, consistant and accurate. They have the added benefits of being cheap enough to practice with and readily available (Walmart). I use the UMC 9mm as a carry round in my S&W 59 series pistol and my Keltec P11 and it has worked perfectly in both guns.

The old yellow box UMC had gond downhill in quality. I guess someone at Remington had the good idea to improve and revitalize the brand.
They also make a .357 magnum in the 100 round box that I will try soon.

The 9 and the .45 are both very good ammo, IMHO.

I just got through with a little testing with the Rem UMC 115 grain JHP yesterday from my Glock 19 into water jugs. Expansion was nice, around .60-.65 or so, and the bullet almost exited the third jug. A large dent was produced on the back end of the third jug.

The only thing I dont like about them is the inconsistancies in the bullets. One side of the hollow point will have more lead than the other, but it doesnt seem to have much of an effect on the overall performance of the bullet.

Expansion of slug enough???

Glock19fan, the NON +P, NON Golden Saber, 115 grain Remington JHP 9mm was getting .60-.65 in expansion? What experiences have others had in terms of this bullet's expansion? I wondered with the velocity being only about 1155 and looking at the bullet design whether it would consistantly expand.

I've shot the 115 gr. UMC stuff a lot and carry it in my pistols - only HP load that I can afford to shoot hundreds and hundreds of rounds at a time. It seems to have plenty of blast and kick (well, for a 9mm), so I wouldn't be surprised if it performed at least decently enough for defense.

0.6 is pretty amazing for a 9mm hollowpoint. Might want to try it with calibrated ballistic gelatin.

It would roughly .62, +- .1 or so.

I shot one out of my Glock 19 and one out of my Ruger P89, and the one that I shot from my Glock seemed to be more aggressive in expansion. Im not sure if the higher velocity of the Glock made it do this, or if the place I shot the milk jug had to do with it (the shot from the Ruger was a little high on the jugs, where the pressure was less).

It did seem pretty decent though. I have notice from looking at the unfired bullets that one side of the hollow point has more exposed lead than the other. After being shot, I also realized that one side seemed to expand a little more than the other, but overall it wasnt bad.
