hey there...

just purchased a remington spr 220 short barrel in 12g. as a shotgun newbie, i have a question about chokes. this thing comes with factory chokes, 1 each [C, IC, M, F]. since it is intended primarily as a home defense gun, what choke is best to use? it seems to me, i'd want the same choke on each barrel, but i only have 1 of each. anyone have a system they particularly like for home defense?

and letting my newbie flag fly here...is it necessary to use a choke at all? will it damage the threading if i just go without?

thanks.

and FWIW...$300 on gunbroker NIB. MSRP=$518 [model with functional hammers]

do not shoot your gun with out a choke! put in the cyl and imp cyl , that should be fine for a home shotty, csa

I repeat, do NOT fire this without a choke tube tightly in place.

Choice of choke depends on ammo, range and mission. 00 buck is commonly used for defense. Try a few brands and see what your chokes like.

Unlike popular myth, what we want is a tight pattern. Pick the load and choke that gives the tightest patterns and then shoot your shotgun until you know it.

I get my tightest buckshot patterns with a modified choke tube in a couple of my 870s. One 870 likes a full choke with no.4 buck and OO buck, real tight patterns.

Repeat--do not fire without a screw-in choke tube in place as you will destroy the threading. Which one doesn't matter but the more open, the more spread and the cylinder or Imp/Cyl are the most commo.

One thing you’re forgetting about here, its not what’s in front of the powder charge that makes recoil, it’s the powder charge. 1 ounce of #12 or of #0000 buck or a slug will recoil the same when shot with the same powder load…basic Law of Physics.

You can find some light loaded buckshot shells, usually for a lot less then “Managed/Reduced Recoil” shells…just check the Dram charge on the box.

Basic rule: The heavier the charge of shot the heavier the charge of powder but the opposite isn’t always true.. You can use a heavy charge under a light load of shot, making it go faster and hit harder

My major pet peeve; slugs are for hunting not home defence! The purpose of a shotgun is to put a spread of pellets into the general area of the target, if you want to shoot a single projectile then use a handgun—bearing in mind that both the slug and bullets will go through your walls and possibly harm someone other then your target. Remember, that if you shoot them at 40 yards, fleeing your home, Castle Doctrine will no longer be a defence.

I recommend using #2 or even #4 Buck instead of #00 Buck…more pellets = denser pattern = better chance to hit…and then at the typical distances encountered in an average home you’re going to hit the target with a spread the size a little larger then a softball to about a volleyball (depending on choke). Which is still a lot bigger then a .75 cal slug! But at a little farther out being able to fill more of the air with pellets is a lot better for you. Why, do you think clay pigeon shooters use such small size shot…
