Had an interesting PM exchange with another member here that thinks that unless you're able to perform to a certain level with a given handgun type, you're unqualified to question, debate or discuss that action type.

So I'm wondering......

What do THR members think is an acceptable standard for the the various gun and action types? This would have to separate "gun owners" from "serious (enough) shooters," so the standard should be at least a B+ level of skill.

He cited his own standard with a single action revolver simply stating "shoot 5, reload, shoot 5 in 20 seconds max." He didn't state any accuracy requirement, distance or anything else, but I will. Since I'm mainly defense oriented, let's make it an IDPA/IPSC target at 5 yds, "C" zone or better. While you may find this a generous target, it's more demanding than merely hitting the backstop.

Gun in hand start.

Single Action: 5, reload, 5 in 20 seconds

Semi-Auto: ? (Or perhaps: "5, reload, 5 in 5 seconds?)

DA revolver:

Pocket Auto:

2" .38 revolver:

What parameters do YOU think qualifies someone to debate about a gun type?

I don't think you need what he has cited. I think you should at least have some first hand experience with a gun.

Not my words, his!

Unless you possess a certain level of skill with a stated platform, according to him, you're unqualified to challenge any of their assertions.

I found it an interesting view.

I think it's a flawed premise. There shouldn't be any skill standard to simply discuss a topic.

I personally can't shoot a machine gun like a Glock 18 on FA accurately - I just haven't had the time (or the gun) to practice. But that doesn't mean that I'm not qualified to discuss the use and design of machine guns.

His viewpoint was HE possessed skill level X, so anyone who was lesser skilled with that platform wasn't qualified to challenge his statements, assertions and whatnot.

I can see that point to some degree, hence my asking what some good drills are for the stated platforms.
