PLANTATION, Fla. -- The family of one of the men who was shot by a retired United States Marine while they attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop said the customer shouldn't have pulled the trigger.

According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Donicio Arrindell, 22, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.

Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.

Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger."He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.

Her husband, Ivory Jones, also condemned the media for its portrayal of Lovell's actions.

"I don't condone what they did, (but) I definitely don't condone the news people making him out to seem like they're making a hero out of this man because he shot somebody down," he said.

But Lovell's neighbor said he made the right decision.

"He did the right thing," said Wendi Hill. "I mean, I was glad that it was them that got shot and not him."

Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn't be charged.

Good shoot marine. Score one for the good guys. eek5bt.gif

I really don't know where to begin.

Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger."He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.

Uhmm, her grandson took the law into his own hands when he decided that any statute regulating robbery was not intended as a law pertaining to himself.

That is about as Highroad of a comment I can come up with at this time.

shooting

I suppose the parents would much rather that the man act like a timid sheep and walked into the bathroom and most likely be then gunned down by those two clowns! Good shot marine, more than likely saved an innocent from being wasted later on by those punks!

Note the obligatory reference to his military experience. We can't just have a non-former military or non-former policeman out there with a firearm defending himself. He doubtless shouted "I am a Retired Marine!" as he shot the unjust aggressor, because it was so integral to the act of self-defense with a firearm.

Good story, righteous shoot, happy ending. I shoot IDPA/USPSA/PAL with a lot of older gentlemen in their late 60s and 70s. I always feel that if a criminal thinks they are an easy mark. They are in for the shock of their lives.

regards,

Luis Leon

If victims are being hustled into a bathroom during a robbery, then the victim's lives were in grave danger! Subway kept their money for the day, customer survives and bad guys are dealt with.

Looks like the parents raised the kids right didn't they :banghead::banghead:. Should have thought about the "some actions may have consequences lesson". Actually it says grandparents, where were his parents? It isn't a gun problem, it's a culture problem. When children are taught that it is better to not resist trouble while being taught that there is no wrong, this is what happens. The kid didn't have to die if he had been raised right, as it was it was better for him to be killed now before he graduated from theft and robbery to murder. No amount of laws will change this, only those in the community that can tell these kids to turn their hats around and act right and then apply a belt to a backside if they don't.

Did anyone see the headline? Talk about emotional misleading...

Family Of Subway Robbery Suspect Says Customer Shouldn't Have Pulled Trigger

Too bad only one......................

"Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.":cuss:

Now our taxes have to pay his bills........................better to have offed 'em both!

thats just natural selection.

being an idiot includes some big risks.

like getting shot.

maybe they were just raised that way.

somebody buy that marine a beer.

The shootee's family and friends will always say that the lowlife criminal should not have been shot no matter what the circumstances.
"When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said."
"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother. What should he have done? Gotten down on the floor and allowed young Donicio and Fredrick to shoot him in the head or cut his throat?
"I don't condone what they did, (but) I definitely don't condone the news people making him out to seem like they're making a hero out of this man because he shot somebody down," he said. The criminals' familial advocates always say "I don't condone what they did, but they didn't deserve to get shot" or some other such twaddle. If it had been in TX Quannel X would have been out with his Instant Mob protesting the death of this youth by (horrors) GUN VIOLENCE and demanding murder charges against Mr. Lovell.
One thing for sure: Donicio won't be pulling any more armed robberies, and Fredrick will not be plying his chosen trade pending recovery from his wounds.
GOOD SHOOTING!!

It's always the same parental reaction with these hoods."He was a good boy, can't believe, fell in with the wrong crowd",woulda, coulda, shoulda,ad nauseum.
Thank you, Mr.Lovell for removing two more violent criminals from our streets.
As far as the headline,Channel 10 is owned by the Washington Post Corporation.
That's all you need to know to figure out the bias.

Where are the kid's real parents?

Painting with a wide brush stroke based on a lot of personal experiences:

Snoop Dog, NWA, Ice T, 50 Cent, Usher, other rap groups with violent, money driven, girl using, drug using lyrics.

Corner dope dealer using them to run drugs to the cars from the age of eight to ten.

Older brothers (not sharing the same father most likely.)

A set of grandparents who only thought that little Donicio was a sweet little kid (in their eyes only.)

Maybe a math teacher or gym coach who tried hard but just couldn't connect.

I always thought getting shot was a standard occupational hazard to armed robbery.

You pull a gun and threaten force, you should expect that force will be immediately returned in kind. Sucks for the robbers, should have picked another vocation.

Good shoot.

It was a good just shooting. if anything someone needs to tell the grandmother this is what happens when you dont raise your children correctly. You have anymore grandsons we need know about

Notice that Mr. Lovell didn't shoot UNTIL the robbers were forcing them into the bathroom. He didn't shoot at them when they walked in, or when they first pulled their weapons, he waited until he had no other options.

Of course the robbers' family is going to say he shouldn't have been shot. If their kid had shot the peope in that restaurant & been caught, they would say "he was always a good, God-fearing boy, we don't know what made him do it." The suspect's families always say stuff like that.

The primary skill in success at predation is the ability to pick the right victim. Donicio and Fredrick obviously lacked the skills to be successful at their chosen vocation, and if your line of work is armed robbery, expect a dirt nap to be the price of error.

Part of me agrees, but it is like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dike. There is a flood in the making.

Just so there is no question, these comments appeared in a newspaper article, which clearly states Donicio Arrindell and Fredrick Gadson did more than just ask John Lovell to go to the bathroom. ...

John Lovell had just finished dinner at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday when, Plantation police say, two men armed with guns rushed inside a Subway shop and demanded cash. After robbing the store, the men turned to Lovell. They wanted his money, police said.

This was a good shoot but sadly this is old news. This occurred 29 June 2007

You're right. Times have changed. Let's move on. Nothing said here so far is relevant anymore.
