Revolvers are Old Fashioned

The reason revolver are so great is that they're old and obsolete. And they shoot much larger projectiles.
Many semi auto pistols are chambered for the big bore magnums. The LAR Grizz discontinued, Desert Eagle and Coonan pistols are chambered for the big bore magnums.
Revolvers are being returned to the market by Colt and Kimber. It is about marketing. Modern revolvers firing Semi-Auto rounds are scoring in the combat matches. :)

.
And now for something a little different...

I haven't yet taken a decent photo of it, but I have a very new-fashioned whirlenpopper: a S&W Model 327 M&P R8

Here's a photo from S&W

8 rounds of .357 mag, pic rails (one is removable from the top of the frame and barrel) and a fantastic factory trigger. The only thing missing are combat sights with Tritium inserts.

I carried a DA revolver in the SO well into the 90's and never felt at a disadvantage. The ,357 Mag. 125 gr SJHP was a stopper and I had the range to myself two or three afternoons a week for practice and training. The agency we shared the range with was issued S&W Model 59s, which could throw a lot of lead in a hurry, but our .357s were more accurate, but I think that had more to do with training----we shot groups, the wunder-nine guys looked as if the shot patterns

These days, what I like about revolvers is that I don't loose the brass.nor have to bend over and pick each case individually ;)

They have managed to make revolvers also black and ugly. Would love to shoot it though.

Not sure about this marketing theory, which means creating demand. Someone would have to have made a strong case that the demand was already there before a company committed resources sufficient to introduce a new gun, not just a variation on a theme with existing parts and a few add-ons. It still seems like both Kimber and Colt have made rather odd plays in a market dominated by pocket guns.

Thinking that revolvers are for pedestrians, who have to conceal. Small semis that are equally concealable and comparable in the damage they can do have few rounds also. I see them jamming a lot at the range. So much of what we buy is a work in progress. We could almost go straight from the gun shop to the gunsmith.

Sadly that is true and many owners do just that (and accept the idea). Personally I will never understand this fad for "pocket guns" or the fact that a lot of guys today refuse to even wear a belt but want to carry a sidearm.

My tastes in firearms lay in over-100-year-old designs, it seems. I'm not necessarily a "tactical" guy; don't own any plastic pistols or wear black while mag-dumping an AR, but when I first saw that M&P R8, I just HAD to have one. I'm serious.

It shoots like a dream. The only thing I don't like is the V-notch rear sight but that is easily remedied with a standard insert.

I once referred to it as a Triple Lock for the 21st Century. Hee. It is an N-frame. It is a large gun.

DWJ! You continue to blow us out of the water! What a marvelous collection you have.

O K Cooldill...You can call me one of the "old men". I sure as hell won't be offended at all. At 74 I carry either a S&W Mod 19 or a Kimber UCC II. Enjoy hours at my range with my [several] revolvers, including my Colt SAA.

Did somebody say Colt New Service?

45 Colt at the top, made in 1906.
44-40 at the bottom, made in 1907.

My favorite revolvers!

I owned a few: .45 Colt, .455 Ely and .45 ACP (1917).

Well balanced and substantial. Some folks say these big Colts were too "clunky" or some such but I disagree. My .45 Colt was my regular carry piece for years until I decided on a Redhawk. Something about depending upon a 100 year old gun in an emergency. I may have been overly cautious!

My night-stand gun is over a century old... It's a S&W M1903 .38 Hand Ejector that I bought for a song because it had been 'ruined' by a previous owner that bead-blasted it to refinish it. Fantastic gun, amazing DA trigger and accurate as hell. I'll probably refinish it this winter, and if possible make a nice pair of antler grips. I's fitted with a big, ugly set of Pachymers at the moment- (shown with the 1903 .32 Hand-Ejector which no longer has the neoprene grips on it!)

Might as well join the dog pile. I have several flavors of most brands of semis, but in my older age I get tired of hauling around all the gear. Cops and other professionals have to look for trouble and are armed accordingly. I don't drink, gamble, go into places that are trouble late at night. For a run to the grocery store a J frame or Bulldog suits me just fine, thank you. We are all responsible for our own choices.
