Hi everyone

I'm wanting .22 bolt actions for my sons, ages 8 and 9. Would something like the Savage Rascal be appropriate or would they outgrow it too quickly? Would I be better off getting a more conventional .22 bolt rifle?

Thanks for any input.

A few years back I got my daughter a detachable magazine youth bolt rifle and found an adult stock to go with it when she wants to use the longer length of pull. I can't recommend that gun since they don't make it anymore (Remington Model 5), however I think a detachable mag with a stock that can grow with the shooter would be a good thing.

Ruger's new American Rimfire Compact would probably make a great choice. You can buy the longer stock inserts when they get taller. http://www.ruger.com/products/americanRimfireCompact/models.html and http://shopruger.com/Stock-Modules/products/594/

Kids grow like weeds and a short stock rifle will end up in the closet. I would purchase something like the CZ Scout which can be full size stocked later on I believe. CZ's are lifetime keepers so your bucks will be a good investment.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I will check out the Scout and new Ruger offering. I like the Ruger as 10/22 mags are compatible.

I bought a Savage Cub-T for my kids several years ago. They still love it, and I still probably shoot it more than they do. It is a fantastic, well made, accurate rifle!

I've not handled the Rascal, but if it is close to as nice as the older Cub was, it is a real winner!

I have an old chipmunk from before they stopped and then started making them again. Its over 20 years old. I shot it for maybe a year. Then when I was 8 I got a 410 and a semi auto 22 at 9 so the little bolt gun hasn't been shot since. I either get something cheaper that it won't matter if they outgrow it. Or even better get something that you can put a full size stock on it.

I highly recommend the CZ Scout if you can find one. They are a LOT of fun for adults as well as kids. My 5 year old, 9 year old, and I all shoot ours. In addition to the fit for smaller shooters, they are very accurate. Ours will shoot MOA and often even tighter with good bulk ammo like Winchester Dynapoints. It gives our full size CZ and BRNO guns a run for their money, accuracy wise.

Another vote for the CZ Scout. I just bought one for the g-daughters. Since they are only 18 months, I have put it in a CZ American stock to break it in, and keep it warm until they can shoot it:D

I bought a pair of Rascals for my boys at ages 9 and 5. I also have a Marlin youth. The Rascals are extremely light. My youngest can stand and hold it up while shooting accurately. I bought the pair for less than the price of a Scout, so I am not too concerned about them outgrowing them, I'll just throw them in the safe and wait for the grandkids to shoot the same rifle their dad learned on. I also don't have to feel bad about the them getting beat up. Being a lever guy, there is a pair of Browning BL-22 Micro Medallions for when they get a little bigger.

I have an original Chipmunk that my dad bought for me when I was about 6 years old. Great rifle for a kid. I do wish I could get an adult sized stock for it though so I could shoot it comfortably today.

My daughter has a Rascal but it is by no means similar to the older Savage Cub. The Cub and Cub Thumbhole are based on the Savage E-Receiver used for the Mk I/Mk II Series and replacement stocks are available.

The Rascal, while a nice, lightweight shooter is a dead end option. Different receiver diameter, scope bases, bolt, and no aftermarket stocks. Scoping a Rascal without a cheek riser is asking for a chin weld from a child, this I know from personal experience.

FWIW, I agree with Sam, the Cub T is a fantastic rifle that my 9 yr. old has to pry away from me more often than not. The peep sat too low for me to see through but a DIP rail and Burris Zee low rings put the scope in perfect position.

The CZ is getting harder to find, another option would be the Mk I Youth which may be available at Walmart.

That's too bad about the Rascal!

The peep being so incredibly low was the only "flaw" in our Cub and a scope fixes that just fine.

Just a really neat rifle all 'round.

At a street price under $170, the Rascal is still a solid value, retaining the Accutrigger which vaults it ahead of most offerings. Promise not to tell but I've put a brick or more through that pink one without my daughter's company. It does garner some hilarious comments at the club.

She managed some very respectable groups from it last weekend using only a camp stool as a rest at 20 yds. Had it not been for my 4 yr. old, I'd have saved her targets.

I have a SR-22 for my daughter 8y/o.

Collapsed the stock (and pinned for NJ) and she loves it. When she gets bigger I will expand the stock as she does. Cheap BSA 4x on top and she blasts the centers out of the targets every time.

I got my son a cricket. They are good if its your first kid since the younger ones can use it as they come along, my seven year old likes it and the AR.

Kids will play with anything; if let alone they will wear it out. I did. Buy a rifle that will teach them basic marksmanship, the pup size means little as it can be sold if you don't need it around to kill snakes or such around the house; sell the the bloody thing to a neighbor with kids at the end of the investment.

Savage is perfect...

As said before, all the basics, safety, markmanship etc can be thought with a nice air rifle.
Cheaper, cheap ammo and less worries and just as much fun for the kids

As they become 16, they can choose from Anschutz bolt action, browning t-bolt , marlin 39a and browning buckmark and hammerli 280 pistol
