Since it's the most potent thing I have close at hand, it's the Ruger SP101 with Federal Hydrashok's. If I have time to get to the open safe, I'd grab my XD9. Now that I have a locking gun rack, I'm going to get my 870 HD 12g. Then it will be that.

You missed one option on your poll.

This is what I use.

It might ruin my house, but it will take care of the rat problem.

I voted that I grab a pistol. And there is a very good reason why I chose that option. It's the only gun I have loaded at all times. No point in grabbing an unloaded gun.

OK, now this is interesting!

I expected the shotgun to be the clear winner here with the handgun running a distant second.

With the shotgun showing 107 votes, and the pistol showing 101, it's almost a tie!

I would not have guessed it.

The rifle (Equal to the other two in my eyes for this situation) is pretty much out of the race with 26 Votes.

Didn't expect that, either. There are some pretty vocal rifle fans on THR that had me believing there were more folks believing in rifles for HD.

I also didn't expect six votes for "Give Them What They Want!".

Do we have a gun grabber or two cruising our board?

1919

It depends on how I feel. On a bad night, I just might grab the 1919 with a 200 round belt and let it all hang out. I do like usmarine0352_2005's choice, but in the dark I tend to trip over the power cord.

Otherwise, I use a Ithaca 37 with #4 buck, just hold the trigger down and pump. I do keep a 1911A1 on the nightstand, but generally grab the shotgun.

I'm pretty handy with Mr. Brownings pistol, but if I've got the three or four seconds to get it off the rack, I'll take a shotgun. The handgun is close by in case I don't have the luxury of getting out of bed to shoot. I voted shotgun.

Since I live in a condo with neighbors on the other side of 3 walls, my choice
is a shotgun loaded with buckshot ( don't want bullets whizzing through the neighbors house).
I've got an old JCHiggins pump thats never failed me in the 26yrs I've had it, sittin by the nightstand with 5 rounds ready to go and a full box of ammo in reserve.

In a door-busting 2AM scenario, I'll be locked in my bedroom with my Mossy 500 12 gauge, loaded with 6 rounds of Hornady TAP 00 buckshot.:D My pistol would also be right at hand, as it sits in my nightstand, but the shotty is the go-to weapon.

Right now it would be a 1911 loaded with JHP and my 9mm with 12 shots loaded with JHP as back up becaue my Mossburg 20 ga shotgun is at the girl friend's apt for her use. It is what she feels most comfortable with. Although that is what I would prefer at 3am as well.

I agree with the posters who said they're aren't going to look for them but let them come to them. That's the way I would prefer it too but when your kids bedrooms are at the opposite side of the house it's my duty to have to go hunt them down so unfortunately no waiting here. I'm going to have to go confront the problem.

Win. pump shotgun will be my equalizer. No. 6 bird shot is all I'll need. Like some else said, I love the people in my house, that belong there and definitely don't want to accidently kill them shooting slugs or rifle rounds in the house, which will easily go through drywall and kill whatever is on the other side.

I've seen what No. 6 bird shot does to pheasants (when hit cleanly) even out to 40 yards. I don't think the BG's will like #6s at 10 to 30 feet, at all! I'm pretty confident at that close of range, it will end the fight in orderly fashion, without being overkill.....JMHP
