I'm mostly into bolt rifles, and something has been on my mind lately, are there any factory production rifles that are/were designed to fit a particular cartridge as opposed to generic designs re-tooled to fit various cartridges.

For instance, Remington chambers their 700 short action for .223 and they have chambered it for .222, but that is modifying an existing gun design to suit the cartridge. Has any major manufacturer ever designed and produced a ground-up bolt rifle specifically for the .222 or .223?

What about other calibers? Have certain bolt guns been designed specifically for certain cartridges?

Any info or history is appreciated.

I don't know about .223, but I remember seeing an article in either American Rifleman or Guns and Ammo about a new Kimber 84 being designed around the .30-06. IIRC, it basically just uses the minimal dimensions required for the round in the receiver.

Didn't really answer your question, but it is the closest thing I can think of relating to topic title.
